Continues to be my oncologist after diagnosis/treatment for cancer in 2007. He seems well versed in what he does, is professional, was able to anticipate what I meant/needed almost before I could explain what little I knew. He has been accessible when needed, concerned when there were problems, supported by nursing staff who are great (especially when they look like they are glad to see you). I would gladly choose him again and am glad my primary care physician made the referral.

Dr. Merkel was nice enough, but never seemed to really know what he was doing. Often, when we spoke about the diagnosis and treatment he seemed flummoxed. Ultimately the diagnosis he gave us was wrong (he said Stage 1, it was really Stage 4). I'm not sure how much of that was his fault, but I was really unimpressed. Most of the nurses in his office are great, particularly Bonnie, but getting an appointment can be a nightmare.

A very compassionate doctor. Took time to explain in detail. Even drew me a picture so I could understand better. I have been very happy with Dr. Merkel as my oncologist. Now, I did not receive chemo, only needed radiation, so cannot comment on how well his office handles that.
