The worst doctor I have ever met in my life. I would give him a zero rating if I could. He is beyond arrogant and is under the impression that he is some sort of God that can tell people how much time they have left on earth. He told my uncle he could not perform surgery on him ( uncle had bile duct cancer) and told him to just go and accept his slow death. What kind of a human being does that?
Do not take your loved ones to him or to UCSD medical center for that matter. They are just researchers that will use you as lab rats then throw you out when they're done with you. Thank God we took my uncle to another surgeob at Hoag hospital who ended up performing the surgery on him and he is now in quick recovery.

In 2004 my husband was told he had cancer in his small intestine and had 6 months to a year to live. When they thought his liver became involved he was referred up to Dr. Hemming at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL where we learned the canteloupe sized tumor was not in his small intestine but his large!! Because it was JUST stage 4 Colon Cancer Dr. Hemming said he could operate and my husband had a chance to live!!! We left his office the happiest couple in the world even knowing he was going to have a Whipple and possibly lose a kidney. He also ended up losing his entire pancrease and his spleen, at least 20% of his liver, stomach, his entire gall bladder, most of his small intestine and a chunk of his large along with his right kidney. Dr. Hemming had to perform 2 intense surgeries and my husband was in the hospital for 3 months and the rehab hospital for one month. 4 Hurricanes hit FL during that time and everytime one hit my husband coded. He doesn't remember a thing!!! I could have lost everything that summer but I didn't. Dr. Hemming I believe is the only surgeon who could have performed that surgery ---and was willing too at that point in my husband's cancer. He had been on chemo prior to surgery and never had to have anymore. We celebrated 10 years CANCER FREE this summer. My husband is 71 and works out at our club 4-5 days a week. He is a very brittle diabetic because he has no pancrease and that is the worst of it. He had another colonoscopy this morning and everything is fine. If I had anything wrong with me I would fly across country to have him treat me. There is nobody finer or more skillful. He will tell you the truth and give you your odds. The rest is up to you.

I approached Dr. Hemming for a 2nd opinion for my mom who was diagnosed w/ bile duct cancer w/lymph node involvement. The 1st surgeon said she was inoperable based on those findings. With a cure rate of less than 5% without surgery, it was a no-brainer to seek another opinion. Dr. Hemming & his staff were extremely professional, kind & responsive. They offered hope along with realistic expectations. They informed without bias. Not trying to push us in any direction. Unfortunately, several days pass & there is a correction to my mom's initial path report. It has metastasized to the liver. Dr. Hemming stated surgery was no longer an option. Despite this & not being an "official" patient, he still answered my follow up questions. He has an outstanding reputation. (I only wish I could have put him to the test!) Highly worthy of your consideration should u have the misfortune of needing such services. Google his name for information & youtube videos. Good luck to you & your family.

Dr Alan Hemming operated on me at Toronto General Hospital in 1997 when I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He encouraged me to have radiotherapy post-operatively when it was not standard treatment here at that time. He provided excellent standard of care and gave me the facts without reservation, I am forever grateful for that and even though I have subsequently survived a recurrence of the same cancer, I know that I owe him the chance to be here in good health.

Cannot express sufficiently our praise for Dr. Hemming and his staff. My diagnosis of liver cancer was such a surprise but with Dr. Hemming's surgery, I am cancer free. The surgery was very difficult requiring some reconstruction but it was successful.

Dr. Hemming performed my liver resection in 1998 at the Toronto General Hospital in Ontario, Canada were he practiced before moving to Florida. He literally saved my life and there are no words to express the gratitude or admiration which I have for this gifted Doctor. Canada's loss is indeed the United States'gain. Each and every day I am thankful for the blessing of having had Dr. Hemming as my surgeon. I am in my eleventh year of being cancer free. I love this man!

This man knows his stuff! He saved my life and is a miracle worker. I would highly recommend him, his staff and University of Florida Liver Transplant, Hepatic Disease department. He was very informative, told me what was wrong in terms I could understand without a medical degree. He was straight up and didn't tell me what I wanted to hear just because I wanted to hear it. He removed a tumor from my liver and did some extensive reconstructing of the liver and surrounding organs and tissue. I was terrified and had never had surgery before this operation. He is amazing! And so is my other doc at UF, Consuelo Soldevila! Many kudos to them both! I owe them lots of praise! I would highly recommend them to anyone.
