Always a very long wait. Very fast. Seems thorough. But manner very arrogant and actually rude. Hyper. Not going back.

I have gone for an annual eye exam with Dr. Spear for 2 years now, and had the same bad experience both times. During the 1.5 hour waiting period before even seeing him, I heard him go on an extremely unnecessary rude rant to his staff while his patients were sitting and waiting- when afterwards I heard his staff laughing about it. Not a professional person and very self centered. The front desk was helpful and kind when I complained about the wait time, but I will not go back to Dr. Spear in the future. Especially when googling his name I saw the sexual assault allegations against him!

I have been patient of Dr Spear for over 30 years. During this period he has been a model of professional and proven very knowledgeable and helpful. The front office went through a bad patch but seemed to have improved immeasurably on my last visit last December. However they are miles ahead of some of the front office staff I have seen at Sunnybrook who can be downright obnoxious.

Reception needs to learn to say please and thank you as well as make eye contact (no pun intended). After being processed from waiting room A to waiting room B and after waiting for an inexcusable amount of time and with no prospect of being seen, I simply left. The receptionist was especially warm when I politely told her that I simply couldn't wait another 30 minutes to be seen. Not sure I would recommend them in good conscience. Feedback on this site is pretty consistent. Staff are horrible and they clearly value there own time more than their patients (customers).

I went in recently for a checkup with Dr. Spear after two years. He had a student with him and keep referring to me as "her" when speaking to the student and i was in the same room. He pointed out a few minor health issues and actually poked me with his pointer finger on three different locations twice on the upper body! He was very arrogant. At one time, he said we had been friends for a long time. I said not we are not friends - you are an eye doctor and I am a client. I questioned him on a few things, he got defensive and told me that I could leave then if I wanted. he was about 45 minutes late. I am not impressed.

Dr. Spear is extremely professional, polite and knowledgeable. My family and I have been with him for last twenty and more years. We like the staff, their punctuality, the setup of the office. Visited last time in December 2015

After moving to the midtown area in 2007 I decided this location would be more convenient for me and seemed like a good place. I was a patient of Dr. Spear and I never had any issues with my vision at my previous doctor.

Ever since my first appointment in 2007/2008, my vision felt off with the prescription he gave me. He diagnosed me with an astigmatism in one eye and my eyes never felt balanced. I had gone back to let him know this, and he said it's fine, it's just an adjustment period because of your astigmatism. So I'm thinking.. okay.. i'll trust that. my eyes never adjusted, and I just went back to him this past December and he gave me an updated prescription which I thought would probably correct this and it didn't. I even purchased new glasses!

I decided to trust my gut, and went back to my old eye doc for a second opinion and guess what.... my gut was right. My eyes were completely unbalanced, which is why I had been getting lots of headaches and eye strain. She gave me a new prescription and I can actually see again comfortably.

Don't go to this guy... if he doesn't take the time to do the prescription math, or go out of his way to ensure you are comfortable with how you see.... then trusting him with your vision is a mistake.

Good clinic. Front staff was nice, dr spear was knowledgeable . A little rushed, does seem to be a popular clinic but overall a good experience. I booked back next year.

While I understand that retinal detachment is a routine matter for this clinic it isn't for me. Unfortunately customer service detachment isn't the best approach in dealing with someone who fears a loss of vision. Dr Speers and the receptionist did tell me that they were going to get me an appointment that very afternoon, and I did actually get that appointment but when I asked about a particular dr. the receptionists answer was that "he is hard to get into see, we do this all the time and you aren't going to lose you vision in the next 20 minutes, please take a seat in the other room and there is a place to put your coat.
The first comment is that it isn't about you ( the receptionist and Dr. Speers) it's about me. I'm the worried patient who fears vision loss because I waited too long to book my appointment. Under these circumstances some empathy and patience, contrived or not is what I needed.
The feel of this clinic is not warm. Signs abound about what you aren't supposed to do. Once before I went to the wrong waiting area - they are a grey and a blue one- and when I was missed and waited extra long and complained about it my concerns were dismissed.
I work with the public and know how annoying customers can be. My suggestions for this clinic is to bring in a customer service specialist, and train Dr. Speers and the front staff. Hint, acknowledge the patients concerns by looking them in the eye and saying something reassuring out of empathy not irritation.

Patient and knowledgeable, very nice. Dr Spear helped me get over my fear of drops/contact lenses after switching optometrists at age 35 and always wanting to wear contacts since I was a kid! Now I wear contacts with ease and use drops without any problem. This in itself has changed the quality of my life not having to wear glasses all of the time. I definitely thank him for that!

If I have any concerns about my eye health he listens and doesn't rush me. Knowledgeable and friendly staff as well. I have recommended Dr Spear to family and friends.
