DR. Reyna was very friendly. He was not rushed. He read my MRI and did and exam and asked if I would agree to xrays. I had the exray and returned to the room where he promply returned to give me the plan he though best for me. I would recommend Dr. Reyna that might need back surgery.

I was surprisingly pleased with the entire staff and. doctor Reyna as well. I certainly look forward to the process of getting better. They were the first group that really listen to me and didn't jump on the bandwagon to just prescribe me pain meds to cover up my problems. Thank you very much

After putting up with calf pain for 3-5 years which was moving up to back of thighs and gluteus, I went to see Dr. Castillo at NM Orhtopaedic. He checked over the MRI I brought with me and recommended trying an epidural injection of steroids in the lumbar. The MRI showed significant arthritic growths and bone spurs some of which were pressing on the spinal column in the lumbar. The injection had exactly zero effect so Dr. Castillo referred me the Dr. Reyna to examine surgical possibilities. I was somewhat concerned as Dr. Castillo thought it would require some spinal fusion ( cementing the spine joint into a rigid position ) and the process could require 3-5 days in hospital and 6 months recovery.
Dr. Reyna was very patient examining the Xrays and MRI I already had on the lumbar and said he would suggest a laminotomy which requires removing only part of the rear part (lamina) of spinal column to gain access and requires much less time in hospital or for recovery. It also would negate having to do spinal fusion preserving most flexability in the lumbar. Dr. Reyna said he had in the past used the small tubes to operate through but found the normal surgery with direct access was more effective for him and he did use minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques to minimize incision size and surgical damage to tissue. They would not be certain that the laminotomy would work until they could look at the spine directly during the operation and it was slightly possible that a laminectomy would be required which was more involved and required more healing.
I was given some additional xrays of the lumbar in the hospital and went through a battery of tests including screening for MERS (antibiotic resistant staph infection).
Dr. Reyna said after subsequent exam of MRI he would be working on 3 spinal joints, L3/L4, L4/L5 and L5/S1 toward the bottom of the lumbar. Around this area the MRI showed clearly the spinal column which appeared healthy and shows as bright white above that are suddenly appeared as dark grey and almost disappearing in the area with problems indicating much poorer spinal column health there with limited circulation of nerve impulses.
About 3 weeks after the first visit to Reyna, I was admitted for surgery. Dr. Reyna told me afterward everything had gone well but the arthritic damage around the joints and spurs impacting on the spinal column were extensive and required more time than expected. I was in surgery about 3 hours. Into surgery about 4pm (after waiting for previous patients who had required additional time), out of surgery to the recovery room about 7pm.
After waking from the anaesthetic , I asked if I could get out of bed after about 1 or 2 hours. The nurses rigged me up with the IV trolley and I began walking slowly down the hallways steadying myself with the trolley. After brief rests, I got up repeatedly for longer and longer walks until I was circling the area multiple times and venturing down connecting hallways without much problem. Jeff (the surgical PA) and later Dr. Reyna dropped by to explain how surgery had gone and thought I was doing fine especially with all the walking. Pain was very minimal due to hangover effects of drugs given during surgery. The next morning after a quite good breakfast, Dr. Reyna agreed to discharge me and let me go home (1 night in hospital). Before leaving, a man came by to fit me with a large back support and adjusted it to fit. I was told I would use if for some time. Gave me percoset with instruction to use regularly to avoid any pain developing. After about 2nd day home, pain began increasing if I did not use enough percoset but then began feeling worse effects from percoset including really bad constipation and after consultation by phone with Reyna, he instructed me to cut back dosage when gradually had me feeling better.
Followups after 2 weeks post surgery, the 6 weeks then 3 months went fine. I was doing extensive walking around the neighborhood which seems to help the healing. I found the stitches used were all dissolvable and did not have to have any removed. I also found that using a AloeVera gel (from Walmart) on the would area helped tremendously to get a nicely healed would with minimal scarring.
Since then progress has been quick and the sciatic type pain down the buttock and back of both legs had disappeared (THANK GOD!). I still am having numbness in front and toe areas of both feet. Dr. Reyna said as nerve slowly regenerates (1 in per month or so) the numbness may lessen or disappear.

After waiting nearly 2 months for treatment by another clinic and developing drastically worsened symptoms I had to look elsewhere. At this point I went to NM ortho for a 2nd opinion and was able to see an MD in a week. I initially was examined by Dr. Wallach and was immediately x rayed and had a stat MRI done that same day. His concern was my sudden onset and rapidly increasing neural involvement. Dr. Wallach immediately consulted Dr. Reyna and I was able to come back in 2 days for an appointment. When Dr. Reyna met with me he laid everything out very clearly and suggested surgery bc of my condition and I had already convalesced for an appropriate amount of time. I was in surgery 2 days later and awoke with a huge decrease of neural involvement. The physicians at NM ortho have the experience to spot problems and found that I had a lateral herniation of my L5 S1 disc which cannot be seen even on MRI level imaging. I am able to walk today because of thease intuitive professionals.

I saw Dr. Reyna for 8+ months in preparation for a 4-level decompression and fusion surgery. During the appointment with him the day before the surgery he advised me that I should cancel the surgery due to the medications I was taking and resched for a later date. At every appt over 8+ months I was required to fill out and submit a list of my medications. For 8+ months he was given this list. He advised me that he would have trouble controlling my pain after the surgery w/my current meds. He pulled out his cell phone and showed me a picture of elderly man in a hospital gown. He said the picture showed that his patient was on so much pain medication that he could barely hold his head up, yet the man was boisterously screaming for more pain meds. I doubt this man knows that Dr. Reyna took his picture and uses it as a prop in his office for an example of what kind of patient not to be. After the surgery was cancelled, Dr. Reyna refused to speak to me or return my calls.

Dr. Reyna performed my second back surgery. The doctor that performed the first one botched the job, and Dr. Reyna went in and fixed it. I was in a wheel chair for several months before my last back surgery. I am now painfree 95% of the time, when I have pain it goes away with a little over the counter medicine and it never gets above a 2, most of the nerve damage is healed, I can walk mostley without any aids, I sometimes use a cane to go up and down stairs but that is even getting beter. I have almost full range of motion, probably better than most people. It has been about 2 years since my last surgery, an XLIF, where Dr Reyna went into the L4-L5 joint (from the side not the front) and inserted a titanium cage and used BMP to help the bone grow faster. Dr Reyna is a wonderful tallented doctor who isn't afraid to try, and develope, new procedures when needed. He will work with the patient to figure out the best course of treatment.
