I must admit to failing in my responsibility to support the Hero that saved my life. I am one of the prototypes of the Texas Roll scoliosis treatment. I am currently 41 years old. I was an outlying case.. normally female 11-13 yrs autistic (25-40 degree bend). I was male 14-15 yrs non-autistic... with a 65-70 degree bend and the scoliosis happened almost overnight. I was fine at 13, hit my growth spurt and my spine grew out of control. My heart, lungs, artery's, kidneys, liver..... all in question as my spine forced my rib cage to twist and warp. With out the hard work of a number of invested professionals (shout out to my AMAZING nurses) I would have either died or have been subjected to a tortured life of misery as one organ failed after the other. My body tearing itself apart.. That was then... Dr. Mahood, dealing with a huge outlier like me.. made new rules, changed the game, invented new math and turned my painful shifting body into the one I have today.

I am a high end landscaper. A music teacher (Percussion/Drum set). A Husband. A leader in my community. Real good chance I have logged more manual labor hrs then most of you reading this. I tell my story for the parents out there... all of a sudden... omg. Whats up with my child's back...

Trust Dr. Mahood. While I'm definitely tardy in telling my story, it's true.

Sincerely, K.R.T

My 14 year old daughter waited 3 months for her appointment with Dr. Mahood at the Scoliosis Clinic at the Stollery Children's Hospital. Then, the day of the appointment, we waited 2.5 hours in the waiting room before we were even taken into a room. When he came into the room he asked her if the scoliosis was causing her any problems, to which she replied that her lower back has been hurting. He then checked out her lower back in a couple of ways, wrote out a prescription for physiotherapy and was ready to leave. He did condescend to answer a question or two on his way out the door, but he was completely dismissive of the scoliosis, even though it had progressed over the previous three months since her first x-ray, apparently because it is not severe enough for surgery. He just kept saying that the curve was nothing and wouldn't get any worse. He did not bring up any options like a brace or Schroth treatments, and seemed to get more and more irritated as I tried to ask more questions. Enfuriating and a total waste of our time and Alberta Health Services money. Not to mention that my daughter felt completely dismissed and insignificant. If your child has scoliosis that is less than 40 degrees in curvature and you get referred to Dr. Mahood, I strongly recommend that you ask for a referral to the lovely nurse practitioner that also works out of the Scoliosis Clinic.

I just had my surgery 1 month ago. Originally it was to go from t4-l4 but Dr Mahood said that he could possibly make it shorter and allow me to have more morbidity long term. He was clear to me that he would not make that decision until they opened me up. They only had to go from t4 to l1 bonus for me. The follow up and answering of questions post surgery was amazing my stephanie and Dr Mahood. They were quick to change my meds and get them called into the pharmacy. Overall I have been seeing Dr Mahood since I was 12 so for 15 years now and I wouldn't trade doctors for anything. Only.complaint is the wait time to get the surgery... but we'll worth it. To mention the YouTube video like another commenter did does not serve as any constructive feedback rather points out the flaws of that individual and what she did that inhibited her healing. I would choose Dr Mahood again.

I was shocked and dismayed by a you tube video that has been posted. Dr. Mahood has been my Doctor since 2007. I have been through heel and back. I have had a lot of surgeries which started because of scoliosis. I can tell you that DR. Mahood always explains the risks of surgery and possible complications. He is also one of the most caring doctors I have met. In the video DR. Mahood is blamed and slandered for things that were totally not his fault. He has no control over what an emergency Doctor does or does not do. I myself hav been treated horribly at the emergency department. I can not and do not blame Dr. Mahood for the actions of another doctor. As well his assistant Stephanie deals with people calling who are in pain and with that comes emotional distress. She can be right to the point which is good.. She is excellent at her job. Would it be helpful if she gave her medical opinion or started being a person's emotional therapist? Her job requires more than answering phones. How do you think surgeries and appointments get booked. Who do you think runs the office when DR. Mahood is in surgery? I understand people being upset and angry at their pain and disability. I don't understand people blaming the doctor or the assistant. Did posting a video make you feel better? Did blaming DR. Mahood and slandering him change anything. I am not blaming the patient but there are so many things she admitted herself that she could of done or not done to help as well. I hear that she is in pain and feels a loss. A video like that though gives the wrong information and implies that Dr. Mahood did something on purpose to hurt her. If you are a new patient or are looking to the Internet for information to get DR. Mahood as a Doctor.. Do not judge him based on the opinion of one patient. Go meet him and talk to him and you will find out yourself that he does give the information required, he does explain things and possible complications, he does care and is an excellent surgeon. As well treat Stephanie with respect. She has earned it. In the end we are all human. DT
