I have had nothing but quality care from this hospital over the past 30 years. Each doctor and specialist who has treated me for: Knee surgery, childbirth (caesareans), ER kidney stone, thyroid issues (and all other family and children's medical issues) have all been professional and caring. The cleanliness of the hospital and their attention to stopping the spread of germs is evident with hand sanitizer stations at every entrance to the hospital and more located throughout the building. Unfortunately this doesn't help those who won't wash, or who neglect their own health, wellness or personal hygiene. We have spent time in the comfortable emergency room and were pleased with the attention paid by the admitting staff as well as the skill of the physicians and nurses once we were seen. St Peter Hospital is also a non-profit hospital and offers charity care for those in low income situations. Capital Med Ctr. is not. I would not hesitate to recommend St Peter Hospital to anyone, and will continue to drive 20 minutes to this hospital even though Capital Medical Center is only 5 minutes from our home.
Under staffed. ER is dirty, not properly cleaned between patients, even when not busy. Sometimes just the gurney sheet is the only cleaning. I saw it!!! Trash and litter still on counter and floor and new patient was put in room. Nothing was wiped down to clean germs. I wiped siderails with hand sanitizer as this room was still a mess too. Work-ups started before decisive, needed information was given. Tests started that were not needed due to disorganization. Speak up, ask questions, think! Husband and I have been there many times and it has gotten worse each time. Being inpatient is worse. So many errors made. I got 4 different infections after one surgery, had to have second surgery, long recovery. I even DIED due to the stress on my body. Nurse got me up to bathroom against DR orders, and my reminder of his orders. I should have refused and pooped the laxative out in the bed. She refused to give me my requested bedpan!!! After having two siezures, while on the commode, I requested 3 times to be returned to bed. Told not enough help at that time due to all of the equipment hooked to me. I died then. Daughter got help, held me on commode. Nurses made her let me go and they allowed me to fall onto the floor. I was defibrilated twice. After several weeks there I had to go to nursing facility because of what happened. I should have had an uncomplicated recovery. I contracted MRSA from nursing home or home health nurse. My quality of life deteriorated from all that transpired there. I'm nearly an invalid now. I would have had no problem winning a case had I sued them but I feared the stress might kill me. I wish I had sued them. It's too late now. NEVER go to any hospital without someone staying with you to watch for mistakes and question things. DON'T be afraid to instruct them regarding hand cleaning, medications, what test is for and that they are treating you, not mistaken and they should be in the next room. That happened to me more than once. Not just at this hospital. If you feel your nurse isn't doing things properly, ask to speak to the charge nurse or nursing supervisor. They need to know those things to protect patients and themselves. Yes, I am a nurse so know right from improper.
The ER department and ER doctor is great at this hospital with friendly and informative drs and rns. Just dont go past the ER doors to the hospital. Long waits for transport. High nursing staff on floor, ie. 3 patients to 1 nurse. At one point was in my room after having a stroke the night before, with NO monitoring, and a nurse did not check on me for over three hours. Food is horrible. Rooms are dingy and equipment is rickety. St. Peters needs to revamp their theme to be patient based and do some remodeling. Not impressed.
