There are still some independent oncologists working in the Buffalo area. Oncology care is also available at local hospitals that do not have the reputation of being understaffed as RPCI does (which also lacks emergency room services). By direct witness, RPCI seems to have employed some inpatient staff (& certain outpatient clinic staff) who do not belong in an oncology environment; some seriously lack the requisite threshold of compassion, empathy, & sensitivity. Some have poor communication skills & dispositions; others do not notify attending physician with serious patient problems (even if terminal) in a timely manner or without begging for help for a loved one who can no longer find and press a call button. Moreover, if a patient care incident(s) makes professional staff appear badly or unprofessional, expect the omission in required documents. Regardless of disease lethality, it is regrettable falling for the infamous marketing such as, "come spend a day with us" in any matter.

In 100 years of existence Roswell Parks claim to fame is get "early diagnosis". The progress in research has been very low if at all. Nepotism and incompetence abounds. One reason, in the early 1990's it became part of the New York State system. These folks are state employees with all the perks that go along. See for yourself at seethroughny.net/payrolls. There are pages and pages of employees in the six figure salary range. As far as a top notch cancer institution, think of these two questions, first, when have you heard of any well known folks going there for treatment? Even our own Jim Kelly went to New York City for treatment. Second, the new CEO and Gov. Coumo , traveled to basically a third world country, Cuba, to smooze them into letting Roswell do clinical studies on a possible cancer drug. Cuba with their limited funds for research can come up with a cancer cure drug, were as Roswell Park which has received, over the past 100 years, Billions of dollars towards research I'm sure, the best they can do is tell you to get early detection. Think of all the fund raising events every year "for the cure". They tug at our heart strings because we all know relative and friends that have been affected by this terrible disease. I do not believe that this institution is being honest in looking for a cure. Where is the accountability for all the monies that have been raised under the guise of searching for a cure. Has any REAL progress been made? I think we all know the answer to that, we just want to believe different.

A family member of mine has been going to Roswell Park for over 15 years for 2 different types of cancer. When he started they were wonderful, now I wouldn't send my worst enemy there. The communication between the doctors with their nurses, each other, the patients and their families is terrible. They have misdiagnosed him twice, lost him after surgery, confused him with other patients, and told us that at home care would not be covered even though our health insurance said it was. They give incorrect information and have gone from caring about the patient and treating them like a human with a disease to the disease. It is also sad that when you ask where the social work office is that the Dr.'s and administration don't know. They have gotten too big and don't care about the families and all the help they could use. I would never go there and hope no one else does so they don't have to go through everything my family does.
