Maybe they are good for the rich and famous, but otherwise don’t bother. I am still active and functional but have been developing mild arthritis in some of my joints. My local ortho doc told me I would likely need one or more joint replacements in the next 5-10 years. I decided to get a second opinion at Steadman, due to their reputation as one of the best ortho centers, to see if they could recommend some treatment or procedure that would delay or avoid the joint replacements. A few weeks after forwarding them my x-rays and my medical history and paying the evaluation fee I got a call from a staff member telling me the doctor reviewed my information and recommended I just go ahead with the joint replacement. I got the impression they did not even read my history to know that I was still years away from that. Then, a few days later I got the written report. It basically said the same thing. However, it was clear that it was a generic report, and the doctor did not even bother to dictate a letter relating to my case. In fact, the letter was a template with tabs to add the patient’s name and the date. They did not even bother to save the letter without the automated fill-in features before sending to me, so I would not see that it was an automated generic template.

Horrible outcome and he is a liar and tried to cover up his mistakes! Basically everything was wonderful EXCEPT the outcome and his and his teams lies! He damaged my muscle when he did the surgery and NOW I am in chronic pain (to my leg and lower back), caused me to have a gait abnormality causing me to tear my knee meniscus AND having a herniated lumbar disc. I knew something was wrong right after the surgery because there was massive swelling over the site where the trocar went into my hip area. The physical therapist ALL commented about how much the area was swollen. I did well for the first 3 months then felt the same pain in my hip as before and my gait never returned. I went back to see him about this issue and he told me that it was fine and I was just a little weak in the muscle. He refused to do an MRI to look at the area I was concerned about and told me I needed more physical therapy. The physical in Vail told me that Dr. Philippon was not telling me the truth. I did my own research and got an MRI by my primary doctor and found out that Dr. Philippon damaged a muscle that was completely atrophied. Now it is over 5 years later and I have become a chronic pain patient. Before the surgery I just had mild hip pain and not my problems are SO much worse. I even spoke to attorneys to see if I could put him on the record for what he did but no one would touch my case because the laws in Colorado are so pro-physician. I did not want any money because I am already blessed with enormous wealth and live at the top 1% of society. I did want him to recognize what happened and NOT lie to me or others. Dr. Philippon is very nice but he is a compete liar and he will get his. Someday, somewhere he is going feel what be in a situation where someone causes him injury and then lies right to his face.

My son had a very complicated procedure involving dr Philippon and another surgeon. He was able to correct extensive damage in a minimally invasive way. Son had complications and his staff was AMAZING at ensuring he got the care and follow up he needed. Dr Philippon is a cutting edge surgeon and he is utilizing novel approaches to hip care. You must have good insurance and expect to pay a little extra for the procedures that aren’t covered. He saw our son through to the end and he is better than he has been in 10 years (poor kid is only 20). I can not say enough good things about Dr Philippon. You likely won’t have too much opportunity to speak with him, but his team is amazing and when you do see him, he is friendly and very informative.

I had two hip surgeries with Dr. P and each time they sprained the surgery leg ankle, badly. They also took a chunk out of my left heel during one surgery. I told the staff and marked it on my forms that I am highly allergic to adhesive tape. During the first hip surgery, they taped me up with regular adhesive tape while I was knocked out and when the nurse tried to change my bandages during the night, it took over 30 excruciating minutes to peel it off my skin only to have my skin taken off with it. I have a 1 1/2 inch scar in the front on my hip and an inch scar on the back of my hip. During the second surgery, in addition to the sprained ankle, they twisted my left knee which never had a problem in the past. On a follow up visit, I went back to talk to the hip replacement doctor since the hip surgery was not very successful and while I was there, had a steroid injection into the left knee supposedly by Dr. Provencher. The injection hit an area of the bursa that caused a thinning of the skin on the side of my knee that bleed open regularly and was deep dark purple. When I went back for a follow up on the knee to show them the horrible mark it left on my leg, the doctor who walked into the room as Dr. Provencher was not the same doctor that did the injection. I am not kidding. I dont know who did the actual injection that went south ( I suspect a fellowship doc) but the real Dr. Provencher was at the follow up visit. His suggestion was to go to a plastic surgeon and see if they could do something for this disfiguring mark on the side of my knee. Gee, thanks. Over the two years of surgeries and follow ups, the staff was difficult to reach by phone. Many times I had to go through the scheduler to let her know I was not getting any returned calls and asked her to follow up. As other patients have mentioned, if you are not a super star, it seems your care is less important. Also, the VOLUME of patients is incredible which also contributes to the lack of attention. During one follow up with Dr. P, he noticed the scarring on my thigh and asked "what's that"? When I told him it happened during surgery from the tape they were not suppose to use on me, he shrugged his shoulders and said nothing. I told him about the sprained ankles and it did not seem to matter either. One nurse actually said to me "youre too skinny. need to gain some weight so you dont get hurt". That is the short of my experience. Much more to say but I think you get the picture. Best of luck if you choose to proceed.

Phenomenal surgeon. Awful team members. If you’re not a famous person or need to get back into a sport, don’t bother. He sees you for less then 5 minutes or not at all. He sees you in the preop area and quickly examines it and comes up with the wrong diagnosis. He needs to do less surgeries so he has time for his current patients. It never was like this but everyone at the front desk are quite rude. I’ve even sent thank you treats etc and no one ever contacts me to thank me. But if you’re important like your father is a doctor back home, they’ll never stop thanking you. I hope his practice fails miserably and only hope is that he moves from Colorado to a place where they see chronic hip patients. I never understood why a surgeon who only deals with chronic and not acute(meaning if someone injured their hip on the mountain, that’s not him) Plus hotels are super expensive as it’s a resort area. And one of the below reviews is spot on. Everything costs. CPM, special ice machine, ice pad, calf pumps, a multitude of medicines and vitamins and expensive compounds. Supartz injections which aren’t FDA approved in the hip so another expense. $300 crutches For patients who are new-a good question to ask ahead of time is will the surgeon have time to see me or do I need to go elsewhere Again, phenomenal surgeon but awful staff. Skiing comes first, patients second or even third.

Dr Philippon is an excellent minimal access hip surgeon--he teaches many other orthopedic surgeons how to do these surgeries and is world-renowned for this. Your results are likely to be fantastic, but you will pay through the nose for it. He is a money-making machine. You will have tests repeated that you do not need, you will be prescribed medications and devices for which there is no evidence-based reason, and you will have repeat x-rays and a repeat MRI scan that are superfluous. And then you will find out that he owns the OR, owns the X-ray machine, owns the MRI machine (through his personal research institute), patented the devices he prescribes (one of which costs over $1000 and is next to useless), leases space to the device reps who sell you on PROM machines and ice machines from his office, and has a financial interest in the pharmacy which supplies the many unnecessary (and few useful) medications. He is a nice guy--and you will spend about 10min with him (twice) for a total bill close to $70,000. The rest of the time he's insulated by administrative staff. If you don't have Cadillac insurance, don't even apply. Result: probably very good. Cost: every penny they can squeeze out of you.

Charismatic, positive and brilliant. Dr. Philippon was amazing for my labral hip surgery July 29th. His staff is excellent and prepared me for ALL I needed to know before travelling from Canada to Vail. I knew what to expect, how much it cost, how long I needed to stay and more. They gave me an entire program to follow post-op which is amazing and helpful. The fact that Philippon is so integrated with the Howard Head physio means you are getting the best care in the world with Philippon trained and experienced staff and resources. Many people talk are upset that he is not punctual. Keep in mind this man is in surgery all day and can't always know before hand how long surgery will take. He is working crazy hours, in fact he saw me on a Saturday for my follow up 4 days after surgery. So he might not be on time for your appointment; instead of berating him be thankful you get to see the best doctor in the world in this field. Additionally, prior to surgery I only saw him for about 5 minutes, but again, I didn't need any longer with him than that. He staff had prepared me so well, that when I met him it was really a formality. His confidence in telling me he could "make me better" was all I needed, so 5 mins was more than enough time to spend with him. He is extremely personable, friendly and charismatic taking an interest in you as a person. His job is to see you for 5 mins, it's his staff's job to assess you, reassure you, inform you and so on. So ask them all your questions!! The Vail facility is top notch; the best care in the world. And Dr. Philippon is a master. I personally paid for my surgery out of my own pocket and don't begrudge the money given the quality of care I was provided. Can't say enough about this doctor, his staff and the facility. 6 weeks out I just had my post-opp with Dr. Philippon and am cleared for moving forward. He completely fixed me. Love this man.

Dr. Philippon staff was friendly and nice. Dr. Cassat Sports Medicine MD was very helpful too. However, Dr. Philippon took two weeks to call us regarding our daughter's hip injury and her diagnosis. I only had 5 minutes on the phone with him and sadly I was not shown her MRI or x-rays to help us understand our daughters' condition. Dr. Philippon wanted to do a PRP injection right away that we felt was not going to really address her issues. So, we sadly felt that we were not important enough of a patient and have gone for a 2nd opinion. We were very disappointed as we live in the Vail area.

Before coming across the Steadman-hawkins clinic in Vail, CO I had seen 14 different orthopedists without a diagnosis. After two botched hip procedures, done by local surgeons, I was determined to find the very best. All of my searches led to Dr. Philippon. Since his clinic in Colorado was nearly a 13 hour drive from my hometown, we were able to fedex MRI and X-ray reports to him. Within a week, we already had a response and an appointment made for evaluation. Dr. Philippon did procedures on both of my hips with positive outcomes. Surgery on my right hip was extremely complex due to the two previous operations, but he was able to repair it without a problem. Even though he sees professional athletes on a daily basis, there is no preferential treatment. He spends as much time as needed with you during each appointment, and you never feel rushed. Overall, he is caring, professional, and gets the job done right, the first time!
