When she was a teenager she lived in Colombia, Puerto Rico and throughout Panama due to her father's executive career relocations. She is completely fluent in both English and Spanish. During her high school senior year she was chosen to go to Washington D.C. as part of the Presidential Classroom. She graduated first in her class and received the Academic Achievement Award signed by President George H. W. Bush. She attended medical School in Panama and graduated second in her class.\r\n\r\nUpon graduation, Dr. Nicolau then completed her first Otolaryngology Head and Neck surgery residency in Panama which included a four month rotation at Texas Childrens Hospital. She also completed a one month clinical rotation in Galveston at UTMB. Upon completing her residency she moved to Boston having been accepted as a Research Fellow at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. She conducted her own genetics project traveling to remote areas in Ecuador and won an award for her research from the the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology. During her years in Boston she collaborated and produced many publications including in the New England Journal of Medicine.\r\n\r\nWhile working at Harvard she met and fell in love with a local Bostonian, who is now her husband. With many different career paths available to her at that time she chose one of the most difficult, but the one she loved. Dr. Nicolau decided to pursue another residency here in the US in Otolaryngology. Dr. Nicolau completed her Otolaryngology residency at the University of California San Diego. She spent five years there furthering her skills and practicing all the aspects of the specialty. During her first year at UCSD she was chosen as Emergency Medicine intern of the year, an important recognition as the interns from all specialties rotate through the ER. She was leaned on by fellow residents for her knowledge and ability to connect with patients, diagnose and devise the best course of action.\r\n\r\nAll of Dr. Nicolau's time spent training in Houston, as well as some family ties, meant that relocating to Houston was an easy decision. She is proud to be able to serve the people of Houston. For all her medical and surgical skills, her ability to relate to each of her patients on a personal level and being part of the wonderful team at Texas ENT specialists is what makes the difference.\r\n\r\nDr. Nicolau is married with one daughter. I always assumed that they were allergy-related. Time after time minor ER doctors just prescribed nasal sprays and antibiotics which did absolutely nothing but offer temporary relief. It wasn't until I was referred to Dr. Nicolau that my life completely changed. I immediately felt the genuine care and passion she has for her patients. She was incredibly warm and caring. CT results showed I had a deviated septum and polyps all throughout my sinuses. Surgery was recommended. Although I was incredibly nervous, I knew I was in good hands. Dr. Nicolau performed my 3 hour surgery 18 months ago and I can honestly say my life has completely changed. I have not experienced one sinus infection since! Dr. Nicolau was the only doctor who truly took the time to diagnose the real issues I had. I refer friends and people to her any chance I get. I can not sing her praises enough.
