Yes Ladies, It Might be Jock Itch

Yes Ladies, It Might be Jock Itch

It isn’t just for the guys. Here’s why the pull to scratch your groin isn’t really an all-male obsession.

Jock itch: mention the words and visions of locker rooms filled with sweaty, smelly football players come to mind. But anyone, really, can be infected with the annoying fungus.

True, it does target certain groups. Women who suffer from the rash, like men, tend to be athletes or overweight. They’re people who sweat more than others, making them more prone to becoming infected.

How can you know if you have it? You can usually identify jock itch by the rash it causes. It’s a red, itchy one that might cause a burning sensation and pain. It can grow in the upper inner thigh area, around a women’s labia and on the buttocks. So, just because it’s not right on your groin, it could still be the real deal.

If you think you might have it, visit your doctor. They can tell you conclusively by looking at skin if you have it, or by taking a swab of the rash and having it tested in a lab.

Simply put, if it looks like jock itch, it’s itchy as hell and it goes away when you apply an anti-fungal cream, you’ve probably got it.

The good news is, it’s not hard to get rid of. An anti-fungal cream usually does the trick.

To avoid getting the nasty skin growth, try to keep your skin dry and clean as much as possible.

Also, keep track of what’s going on down on your toes. Athlete’s foot can transfer easily to your towel, and then up to your groin, if you use the same piece of cloth to dry off all areas. Be discreet. Treat your athlete’s foot pronto and you’ll less likely to get a rash someplace else.

Also, don’t share your personal items, even with your partner. Wear non-form fitting clothing, and remember to toss your workout clothes in the wash after each use. They probably smell pretty gross, so this is a no-brainer, but you there are always those superstitious types who get attached to one pair of socks. All season long- OMG.
