Don’t Ignore These Signs of Zinc Deficiency

The World Health Organization reported zinc deficiency as a more and more common condition in recent years.

Studies show zinc deficiency is a very common micronutrient deficiency. The condition has been linked to intellectual impairments, poor growth, perinatal complications and increased risk of mortality and morbidity.

As the name alludes to, zinc deficiency is a problem that occurs when the body does not have the recommended amount of zinc for proper functioning. Here are some of the signs and symptoms to keep an eye on that could allude to insufficient zinc:

Fragile immunity system

Zinc is essential in maintaining a strong immune system. The micronutrient is key for gene transcription; apoptosis, which is responsible for killing dangerous bacteria in our body; the growth of T cells; and other protective functions for cell membranes.

Thinning hair

Zinc deficiency has been linked to hair loss. Researchers say low zinc levels lead to hypothyroidism, which is the thinning of hair. Studies claim thyroid hormones play an important role in the successful zinc absorption of the body.

Rashes and Acne

Skin complications have been associated with low zinc levels, too. People with zinc deficiency are more susceptible to skin rashes and acne, as the wound healing process is compromised and delayed without sufficient zinc supplies in the body.
