A Massive 132-Ovarian Tumor Was Removed From a Teacher in Connecticut

Strange but true…and completely amazing.

It’s a story you usually hear of coming from someplace far across the planet, but this one actually took place here on American soil. Yes, for real. A massive tumor weighing well over 100 lbs was recently removed from a 38-year old woman living in Connecticut, who wishes to remain anonymous.

According to reports on CBS News, 12 surgeons took 5 hours last Valentine’s Day (February 14th) to remove the growth from the woman’s left ovary.

How did it get to be so big? The tumor, which thankfully wasn’t cancerous, must have been growing for a while, and presumably at a slower pace. Back in November of 2017 however, it began growing at the astonishing rate of nearly 10 lbs every week and furthermore, the patient’s legs became so swollen she could no longer walk.

Because of the parasitic growth, the woman was extremely malnourished by the time she got help. Surgeons who treated her at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut said she had seen many other doctors who had been unable to help her.

Has it all ended happily? Yes. Surgeons successfully removed the tumor, and also managed to preserve the woman’s ability to have children in the future.

“The good part about this story is, we were able to save her reproductive organs,” said Dr. Vaagn Andikyan, a gynecologic oncologist for Western Connecticut Health Network to CBS News.

“As of right now, she’s not interested in having more children, but she wanted to have the opportunity, and we were very careful to avoid damage to underlying reproductive organs.”

The woman was suffering from complications in her abdomen, and had a very large risk of developing blood clots because the tumor was constricting blood flow through her vessels.

It’s now been 3 months since the surgery took place and the patient has returned happily to her position as a teacher. And she is definitely much more comfortable.
