4 of the Biggest Health Trends of 2017

Health trends come and go. Raw food? Maybe. No carbs? Sure. Everyone has their thing. But this time it’s about bones, bowels and being biodynamic.

Depending on your body type, physical challenges and tastes, different fads can lure different people. In the face of change though, one thing stays constant: a desire for healthy living.

Here are 4 of the most popular trends so far, of 2017.

1) Bone Broth

Eating bone broth, or soup made from the your leftover bones, is something that has arguably been around for ages and ages. It’s a tried and true way of keeping healthy.

But recently it’s experienced a surge in popularity. Blame it on a hard economy causing a desire to make the most of what you’ve got: making your own bone broth is all the rage in California, and some are going so far as to blame hipsters for pushing up the price of bones.

Why are consumers flocking to the soup? Bone broth is basically a dish our ancestors probably turned to when there was simply nothing else to eat. That being said, it’s also comes full of vitamins, cellulite busting capabilities and more.

If you need things like glycine, calcium and glutamine, bone broth has it. This hot soup is also said to be good for healing your joints, and treating allergies. The nutrients leak out from the tendons and cartilage while it stews for 18 hours or so.

Sure, this might not be a cure-all but it is getting people back in the kitchen and cooking…for hours on end. For a recipe, click here.

2) Biodynamic Food

food-trends-2

Somehow this trend sounds like something that can power your body and your home and compost itself while taking your dog for a walk.

Biodynamic food comes from produce that’s grown organically. Sometimes it’s done according to the cycles of the planets and with other mystical tie-ins. The method treats animals, crops and soil as a single, interrelated system. What’s the real pull? Biodynamic food is believed to be one of the most sustainable types of food, and some think, the best at producing nutrients.

3) Low-FODMAP diet

food-trends-5

This diet name is so cryptic you gotta love it. Acronyms. The low-FODMAP diet was developed to help treat people who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS.

FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols and the diet involves restricting your consumption of a list of foods found to be high in FODMAP for about 4-6 weeks.

Once their eliminated, these foods are then gradually re-introduced to the eater one at a time. The idea is that it allows an IBS sufferer to identify which foods set off their symptoms.

What’s my take? A lot of people started eating a gluten-free diet once that one broke to the mainstream. In the same vein, far more people likely try the low-FODMAP diet than actually need it. Should you try it? Why not. Its creators highly recommend followers consult a dietician for help in how to do adhere to this diet in a healthy way, (ie, don’t try it on your own).

4) Drinking Vinegar

Having a swig of vinegar each day isn’t something entirely new. 2017 is seeing an upswing in its popularity, though.

Why drink fermented ethanol?

Different types of vinegar are reported to do different things for your system. The benefits range from lowering your blood pressure to improving heart health. Nothing bad about that, so drink up!
