Perhaps the best heart surgeon in the US. Replaced my aortic valve in 1997.It's still doing fine. Also bypassed my left main artery. The most knowledgable and dedicated doctor I know.

Dr. McGiffin saved my 22 year old son's life in 2007. He had an aerotic dissection. He was away at college and was air flighted to UAB where Dr. McGiffin took over his care. Had it not been for God and Dr. McGiffin's expertise, my son would not be here today!

Dr. McGiffin is the man! In 1999 I had an aortic aneursym that was successfully repaired by Dr. Pacifico (retired). In December of 2010, I found out through bi-annual cardiologist visits and consulting with Dr. McGiffin that I would need an aortic valve replacement. He and his staff took the time to give me great advise giving me all my options and allowing me to choose my treatment, care and date of my surgery. During surgery it was discovered that my previous aortic graft repair had formed life-threatening complications and had to be replaced. An aortic graft and an aortic valve replacement was accomplished by Dr. McGiffin. What was a scheduled four hour surgery ended as a nine hour marathon. Dr. McGiffin personally checked on me daily, even though it was New Year's weekend. He and his staff at both the Kirklin Clinic and at the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital were truely outstanding. They have no peers. My recovery has been wonderful. I would not choose any other Surgeon.

Dr. McGiffin repaired an aortic aneurysm and replaced my aortic root and valve in May of 2006. I was 31 at the time and did not know I had any heart problems.I was diagnosed w/ Marfan's syndrome after a trip to the ER b/c of excruciating pain in my lower back on the right side.I was told I had survived an aortic dissection plus I was living with an aortic aneurysm the size of a small grapeftuit.I was scheduled for surgery in 6 wks.The surgery went very well.Everyone who has looked at my heart through an ekocardiogram says they can't even tell any work was done;It looks like my natural heart:) I unfortunately am in need of another aneurysm repair in a different place(about a foot long in my descending aortic vessel), and yet I have been blessed again with Dr. McGiffin's help. He is a very kind, patient, and knowledgable doctor.I even freaked out and told him I had decided not to have the surgery, and he has warmly accepted my request to be put back on his schedule.I am happy!

My husband would have died at Baptist Shelby Medical Center if it had not been for Dr. McGiffin. My husband got horrible, negligent care from this hospital and their cardiologist in my opinion. The cardiologist let my husband's condition deteriorate and would not talk to our family. They were rude and would not give us the information we needed to help my husband. I called Dr. McGiffin after a friend gave me his name and asked him for help for my husband. He left Birmingham and drove down to the hospital my husband was in and moved him to the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham. My husband's condition was very critical but so many doctors worked hard to save his life. He is an incredible doctor and person.
