One of the most compassionate doctors I have ever met. The family atmosphere is a plus. Very helpful, usually positive but direct. He is a big plus in my book, I put my life in his hands with confidence.

Followed me as my kidney disease progressed for almost 1 year. Horrible experience. Pessimistic, unprofessional environment (his wife as the receptionist, and son as transplant surgeon next door), did little to delay the disease and pushed for immediate transplantation. Lack of empathy was shocking...put on a low potassium diet, I told him i had eaten a handful of strawberries, he told me to eat one then sternly sais "savor it." Pushed me out of his office one time his precious son called during my visit (paid fully out of pocket). I stayed for a year because i was younger, very sick, and unexperienced. Found Dr. Appel..amazing!! calm, reassuring, respectful and delayed by kidney disease by 6 months to delay transplant til I could find a suitable live donor in my family. He didnt have an email address. He barely knew how to use internet (in 2006). Not exactly an educated updated nice doctor.
