As a military vet with mental health issues, along with chronic pain thrown in the mix, I have found that since I now live alone with no support system, treatment is elusive. I know "mental health" is a nice phrase that is popular to try and attach your name to, but finding true pro's that show empathy while showing respect is very rare. I have been under Dr. Johnson's care fro many years, and have never felt for one moment that he was in it to get me the help I need, and willing to make a few extra phone calls to help me out. I wish there were more people out there with his approach to work, and his patience. I have always felt like part of the "team" to make my life better. He listens. He listens. So important but rarely seen.

M a vet with ptsd. I found him to the point and he didn’t “sugar coat” anything. I find a lot who complain, seem to be complaining about their “feelings” and not on his actual work ethics or morals. I found him extremely knowledgeable and to the point. That said, I went to a civi dentist for the first time since I was 19 and couldn’t get over how “touchy-feely “ they all were. I was used to “sit down and shut up” and this was totally different. I guess what I’m saying is, dr Johnston is great as long as you have thick skin or aren’t too emotionally sensitive.

Doctor Johnston is an honest, forthright individual and what he lacks in tact he makes up for in observational skills. I found him very intelligent and knowledgeable; however he did not exactly make me feel at ease. Still, I came away from our appointment with the help that I needed. Unfortunately, I found his staff lacking compassion and sincerity. As the front-runners in the office they did not make me feel welcome nor did they appear to exhibit any sense of tolerance. It was all business and no smiles for them.

I should have rated this animal the first time I saw him, perhaps I could have saved a lot of people a lot of grief, especially women......he is extremely verbally abusive , I experienced it, and I fully stand behind my comments.

Saw this guy a while back. What an arrogant prick. I read his reports on me and he clearly doesn't listen well. Not surprised to read that he was fired from Valley Regional.

Dr Johnston is excellent at what he does. A Psychiatrist diagnoses mental illness and mental afflictions. They do not do therapy. That is what a Psychologist is for. Dr Johnston diagnoses your condition, and then he oversees a treatment program for you, whether that be meds, therapy by a psychologist, or both. A lot of the negative comments on here do not seem to understand that. He will most certainly give you some advice on the best course of action for you and link you up with a host of experts that will drill down into your issues, all the while monitoring your progress. He is very confident in his ability to help you. Unfortunately, some people mistake confidence for arrogance as the traits may seem similar. As for assistants administering a personal inventory checklist, that is used to expose issues that you are having that may not be obvious to you, but when scored, that gives Dr Johnston a good idea of what you are not telling him. The assistants are simply adding up columns that you ticked, and presenting the score to the Dr. They are not evaluating you whatsoever, so don't read too much into that. That fact that they may seem young would indicate they are being mentored as the next generation of mental heath workers.

I rate Dr. Johnston 3/5. I've suffered with depression my entire life. I've been to other counscelors, psychiatrists and have had meds. He did more of the same. I truly believe that depression can result from chemical imbalances within your mind and body since I've felt this way pretty much my entire life. He more or less discounted my beliefs - not good I thought. Furthermore, I would say I had a normal childhood and no real traumatic emotional events in my life that would warrant the counselling he kept trying to prescribe.
If you're looking for any psychiatrist to help you through a traumatic event or condition, Dr. Johnston can probably help. If you're looking for a more progressive doctor who thinks outside the medical box, if you will, I'd find someone else. I felt no better after seeing him for 2 years. Post report. Skeptical of the usefulness and effects the meds were having, I took myself off the anti-depressants. I feel the same now as I did under his care. I am coping in my own ways and still hold fast on my beliefs.

I am a female Veteran and if it wasn't for the care, compassion, advocacy and humour of Dr Johnston I would not still be alive. The diagnosis was quite a shock and the journey has been tough...but with his help and the care and compassion of his team I'm getting there...baby steps
