I saw Dr. Leahey 15 years ago at the age of 12, because I was experiencing almost daily shoulder dislocations, which of course, are very painful. I will never, ever forget that appointment, for all the worst reasons.
It was one of my first times seeing a surgeon for a consult, and I was understandably nervous about it, as I imagine many kids are in similar situations. Upon my arrival (with my parents, of course), his staff were rude, and he was late by at least half an hour. When I finally did get in to see him, he took one look at my scans, roughly swung my shoulder around in a circle without my consent, and said there was nothing that could be done for me surgically.
We asked him if there were non-surgical options he could suggest, like physiotherapy or bracing, and he told us that physiotherapy was "hokum" and that I would just have to - and this is a direct quote - "suck it up, princess". Then he asked us to leave.
I will never forget that moment. There I was, just a kid, in terrible pain everyday and searching for some help, and instead of showing an ounce of compassion when he told me that he couldn't provide that help (which is fine - he's a doctor, not a God, so I understand that he couldn't fix my shoulders!) he chose to be dismissive, rude, and unprofessional. I was a child, and he left me with tears streaming down my face, feeling like nobody would ever be able to help me and I'd be in pain forever. He completely changed how I viewed doctors that day, and I'll never, ever forget it.
