Lots of knowledge and talks a lot because believes she can genuinely help you. However, personality vulnerabilities within herself makes her blinkered as to her own shortcomings, including instability of mood, black and white thinking and tendency to be defensive when questioned by patients and families.

After several misdiagnosis by numerous psychiatrists, Dr. Charkey-Papp has changed my life with her thorough analysis of my clinical case history. She is one of the most extraordinary individuals I have ever met and her knowledge and insights are off the charts. Dr. Charkey-Papp is an extremely well-read and highly cultured practitioner and I feel that some of the staggeringly poor reviews one can read below reflect the chronic ignorance and parochialism that so many Western Australians are sadly renowned for. Therefore, if you wish to receive an honest appraisal from a psychiatrist that may transform your life, then this the go-to psychiatrist in WA.

As usual a sanity saving visit. Julia has been seeing my son since he turned 18. In 2020 I sought my own diagnosis. Julia is a Physician not just a Psychiatrist who takes a wholistic approach. Not only does she support my mental health but one of my most major health issues diagnosed after tests by a Specialist at SCGH for which I had been for over 10 years on strong medication started to dissipate till the point I am just aware of my diet. The cause was severe anxiety that came with the ADHD. This is hereditary the same as ADHD. Julia is always open and honest, warm and considerate. Without her support I don’t think I would have made it. My 24 yr old Son loves her, she can relate to him on so many levels he trusts her totally. She may not always give you the answer you are hoping for but she explains in depth why if you are prepared to listen. The truth isn’t any better if it’s sugar coated. The support she provides in these situations is genuine and just knowing she understands gives me the strength to face another day.

BTW If you speak to someone politely and with friendliness you find they naturally reciprocate. Learning that you won’t always get the outcome you expect that is given in error.

I’m now 65 with years of experiences with Specialists and I find Julia stands out because she is not blinkered such as others knowledge can be restricted to their speciality. Julia pays close attention to my medication and always checks in with me, sends me off for blood tests and liaises with my GP enabling them both to provide me with cohesive medical and mental health care. 5 STARS is not enough.

Remember if you are not prepared to listen or are unhappy because you don’t get the answer you wanted don’t place blame. Get a second opinion, do your research and remember we are all different.

Julia has been my saviour both for myself but for my carers role. She is amazing and never in the 8 years we have been seeing her has she been anything other than caring. So glad we have her in our lives. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Avoid. This woman should not be allowed to be a psychiatrist.

I first started seeing Julia in high school. This was my first and last psychiatrist I had been to. I had a lot of underlying issues that she didn’t seem to care for and immediately gave me a diagnosis of Generalised Anxiety Disorder. I also was given a diagnosis of ADHD, however when I expressed that my biggest issue was dissociative, experiencing depersonalisation/derealization. She pretty much told me there isn’t any treatment available (there is). This traumatised me and made me feel incurable. She was also very cold, I understand that she’s a psychiatrist and not a psychologist but she lacked the empathy and understanding that should be associated with a mental health professional. She would also talk a lot about herself in my very short appointments and often would be 45 minutes to an hour late even when I had arrived to the appointment on time. I’m glad to see I’m not alone in my experience, this shouldn’t put you off seeking psychiatric help, I strongly suggest just looking elsewhere.

Sadly poor: but over a decade ago. Her treatment of my daughter was a nightmare. This area of medicine is difficult.

Was seeing her for OCD and, as a symptom of my condition, had anxiety about taking new medication (especially several new pills at once). Failed to start new meds after an appointment, and wanted to discuss them in more detail with her at the next session for reassurance. Instead, Charkey-Papp wrote me off as 'willfully noncompliant' and immediately dropped me as a patient. The change from extreme friendliness to coldness was quite stark.
