I had the unique luxury of having the same rheumatologist at UW-Madison since I was a child, and to say that she was amazing is an understatement. She managed to get me access to Enbrel at the age of 14 the week that it was approved for use and adults when we were both out of ideas as to how to continue to treat my horrific case of rheumatoid arthritis that I had already been dealing with for 10 years. I will never forget the Tuesday that I receive that shot, and then just a few hours I realized that this is what people are supposed to feel like- -they are supposed to have a little bit of energy, a slight appetite, the ability to hold a pencil without extreme pain and awkwardness, and not experience body-wide stiffness and exhaustion ob a constant basis. I remember it being 2:30 in the afternoon and I was watching a rerun of “Let’s Make a Deal” after coming home from that appointment and I knew from that moment on that things would be different, and I cried tears of hope for the first time ever. Dr. Carolyn Bell was her name and I could never speak more highly of her. She is retired now but she changed my life, not only with the care that she provided me physically, but emotionally as well. Every child- -heck every human being on the planet in need of one-deserves to have a rheumatologist like her.
