I had spinal surgery through Dr Li and greatly improved my spinal problems. I had serious damage to my spine and he repaired it as well as could be. He is excellent on follow-ups and post-surgical appointments.

I had a serious neck problem several years ago. Family doctor referred me to this Dr. Li. After waited for a long time (several weeks) without hearing anything, I called his office. The secretary gave several reasons for the delay (too busy, etc.). I clarified that I was not asking to see doctor right away; I was rather inquiring my appointment date. She insisted that I wait for answer from my family doctor. One week later my family doctor's office informed me that the referral has been rejected.
I was polite and humble during my call hoping to gain her empathy with my physical suffering. Apparently, they viewed that their authority has been challenged and retaliated. Not surprised when saw a few reviews being critical of his rudeness and arrogance.

He is the baddest doctor that I have been met, mean and rude, decline the patient without any reason. My mom was referring by family doctor, and he sent a letter to request MRI, and we did right away, then he sent another letter saying that he is busy. That’s very rude, if he is busy, why didn’t mention it at the first time? He declined again when I indicated we can stay in the waiting list. This is not reasonable, he just use “busy” as an excuse to keep the patient out. I would like to emphasis that we don’t know him before and he made declined decision before he see my mom. This is not acceptable, will find out the solution somewhere.

If I could rate Dr. H. Li higher than a “5” I definitely would, as he is much more deserving of a highter rating. I have been a patient of Dr. Li’s for 8 years. In that time I have had 2 surguries performed by Dr. Li. I have numerous back ailments, including scoliosis, degenerative disk disease, stenosis and osteoarthritis. I had tried every type of treatment to control my ongoing
and increasing pain, before I agreed to take the final plunge of having back surgery.
There was a certain level of trust I felt from Dr. Li during my first consultation. DR. Li performed a laminectomy surgery involving the insertion of rods and screws from the L2 to L5 disks. The first surgery provided me with much less pain and increased my mobolity for five years and then the pain became unbearable over the next three years. This was NOT because of any wrong doing of DR. Li’s first surgery attempt. It was because a very small percentage (only 2-3%) of patients will have the degenerative disk disease advance to the other discs. The pain got so bad I was unable to walk for the first hour of every morning and my future mobility was being sadly comprimised. DR. Li was brave enough to schedule another surgery to completely remove the previous hardward of the past back surgery and then perform my most recent surgery which was performed Septmeber 12, 2018. Dr. Li removed all the previous hardward and placed longer new rod supports and screws involving disks L1 to T-12. On September 13th, the following day after my surgery, I walked to the washroom for the first time in a half year. It has been a positve experience and I just hope I can continue to play golf, care for my grandchildren and resume the active life I desire.
Dr. Li is a man of few words, a man of enormous skill, intelligence and compassion. I am so grateful to have been a patient of Dr. Li’s. His secretary Grace, is so organized and the Trillium staff were very caring and efficient.
The only negative memory I have of my first experience was a breakdown of communication involving followup surgery medications, which did not involve Dr. Li.
My advise to anyone facing surgery, is to have all your questions answered, communicate thoroughly and approach your medical experience with confidence and a positive attitude. It's also important to be realistic about your expectations......mine have been exceeded!

I came to Dr. Li as a referral from the Rothbart pain Clinic. I had a spondylolthesis fracture on the L5/S1 vertebrae that needed to be fused. I was experiencing sciatica pain on my right which prevented me from walking any distance of significance. I had the operation on January 29th. The result was worse than the symptoms I had before. I was on my back for 6 weeks with no sign of improvement. Dr. Li advised that I give it time. By the end of the 6th week I had had enough. Fortunatley I got a referral to Dr. Ford at Sunnybrook. He did a CT scan and found that the spinal cord was sitting directly on a nerve and no amount of time would correct it. We agreed to a new surgery on March 3rd. The result was spectacular. After redoing all the would done by DR. Li, after 6 hours and 2 blood transfusions I am feeling like I did 20 years ago. We are still not sure why Dr. Li made to mistake but I would be careful using him. Had his mistake not been rectified I would have been in big trouble unable to walk or sit.

Brief History
I was suffering from severe back pain and disc dystrophy which led to spinal stenosis over the period of 20 years. Now the time had come that I was getting restricted to walking and the pain was increasing every day. I had two meetings with Dr. Li and he suggested me to have the surgery as this was the last resolution otherwise I would be wheel chaired. I passed two years trying other solutions such as, DRX 9ooo(traction of spine), had steroid injections for over 4 years, many balms, and natural pain killers but nothing worked and my pain got worse. I could see that Dr. Li made a very correct prediction because I wasn’t able to walk much. I also consulted with other spine specialists and they also advised me to undergo surgery. Therefore, I had decided to bite the bullet or become paralysed and end my life on a wheel chair.

Surgery
November 30th, 2016 was a miraculous day for me as Neurosurgeon Dr. Hui Li did my Spinal Fusion surgery at Mississuaga Trillium Hospital. I was very impressed with him as he came outside smiling to welcome me and pushed my bed himself to the operation theatre. It was a great motivation for me as at the age of 74 I was quite uncertain of this serious surgery. It was a long and very difficult surgery as I went in by 11.00 am and after the recovery I was transferred to my room in the evening. I had made it through this precarious operation involving lumbar decompression of 2 Thoracic discs
T 11 and 12, Lumbar discs from L l to L 4, decompression, insertion of a cage and spinal fusion plus insertion of 16 screws and Titanium rod in my lower spine for disc replacement and stabilization of spine for all times.

I must say that the surgery carried out by neurosurgeon HUI Li was done with utmost precision and skill. Though after such a major operation the risks were there, yet he handled the operation along with his team with pure dedication. I spent more than two weeks in the hospital which was a comfortable stay and I had good nursing. My 41 staples were removed very carefully by a skilled nurse. I was discharged after a few days spending in the Rehab at the hospital.

Recommendation
The miracle was that I came out walking out of the hospital with no major side affects. I could go to the washroom independently and now I’m walking with the walker. The greatest news is that the major pain which I had for the past twenty years in my back and legs which didn’t allow me to walk has completely gone. Now I’m only weak and have some post operative pain which will go away with my recovery.
My family and I are very grateful to Dr. Hui Li and I recommend him as the best Neurosurgeon who is very dedicated professional. I rate him with the five star success! My prayers and good wishes are with him.
