If I could give a minus, I would! It's taken me some time to write this, but I feel it is significant to the general community seeking an OBS & Gynae Dr. Whilst my endometriosis was minor and small, Dr Alan Tong encouraged me to proceed with surgery to maximise chances of conceiving. I took upon his advice and had I had a Hysteroscopy, D&C, Laparscopy & excision of my endometriosis. It was performed by Dr Tong and his registrar Tanya Mckenney at Westmead Public Hospital. One week post-surgery, a gauze fall out when I went to the bathroom. I was completely horrified and shaken! Being a health practioner, I questioned how could their count go so wrong? This traumatic experience went from bad to worse, with Dr Tong not acknowledging the severity of the issue when I showed him images of the gauze a week later in his rooms. He acknowledged that it was a gauze but merely said I don't know how that happened. At the same time, I also lodged an official complaint with the patient liason officer at Westmead Public Hospital as there was a definite problem with the processes in their operating theatres! Over many months, I did not receive any communication despite following up the matter over many months. I felt the seriousness of such an issue was ignored by Dr Alan Tong and Westmead Public Hospital. As a health care worker, I understood how fortunate I was, but at the same time, how wrong things could have gone. Considering that I have an auto-immune condition (which the surgical team were aware of), some may say, extra care should have even been taken and I could have easily gotten Toxic Shock Syndrome or a severe infection that could have killed me! After months of no responses, I lodged an official complaint to the Health Care Complaints Commission. This was an exhausting process, despite having the HCCC mediate a response. It took another 7 months before I received any response. The response coming from head of Obs and Gynae, Dr Andrew Pesce, who investigated the matter. What was extremely disappointing was I found out from communicating with Dr Pesce, that Dr Tong had played it down and was dishonest. Dr Tong did not inform Dr Pesce that he had seen pictures of the gauze and stated that he believes it may be an error on the patient's part, saying the gauze may have been a big blood clot or a decidual cast. Dr Tong knew that I am a radiographer working in a public hospital, so definitely would be aware of what is a blood clot and what is a gauze! However, he blamed that it was possibly my error and that I didn't have a clear distinction of what "that item" was when it fell out of me. I was completely livid and insulted by this response! This was my first surgical procedure ever and it was one that had left me traumatised for months, unable to sleep properly. I found Dr Tong, ignorant, dishonest and unapologetic and tried to shove it under the covers to protect himself and his registrar. At one point when I had communications via HCCC, I was informed that the Drs tried to blame the nurses. However, when speaking with Dr Pesce at a later date, Dr Tong denied ever using and putting a gauze inside my vaginal cavity, hence further ignorance on his part. I mean, the only people who could have placed a gauze inside me are surely the surgeons!! If this can happen to me, it can happen to any one of his patients. Despite having an abundance of experience, one of the worst case scenarios still occurred to me under the hands of Dr Alan Tong! I, as a patient, had something (a gauze) left inside of me!! I would not recommend Dr Alan Tong to anyone. I do not want any other female, partner and family to go through the horrible experience that I went through.

Dr Tong is too hard to get in contact with if you need emergency advice. I was 10 weeks into my first pregnancy when I found pink spotting. I called him immediately, but was told I had to make an appointment to see him, and the only next available was in 4 days. I didn't really know what to do, so I had to google (which was my only resort). I booked myself in for an ultrasound, which confirmed no heartbeat. I was devastated, and called Dr Tong again, but still he was unavailable. That night I was in intense pain and had to go to the public ER. I had miscarriaged. I once again called Dr Tong, but again no reply from him. Instead I got barked at, whether I wanted to keep my appointment or not. The morning I went to see him, reception came in...she told me that Dr Tong was too sick to come into work that day and that I had to understand that he is human too. I was so upset that I had him as my OB and received absolutely nothing from him during a hard period where you would need guidance and empathy. I'm sure he is very knowledgeable, but you firstly have to get past reception, then fit into his tight schedule.
2 days after my outburst to the receptionist I finally got a call from Dr Tong. By that point I had more faith in the public system, and had lost all trust in him and his team.
