I love Carilion. Anyone who understands the logistics of the medical field know that it only takes one patient to back up the entire day of scheduling. The most I have ever waited is 30 minutes, which is perfectly acceptable. Good luck finding anything different. Speaking specifically of Dr. Mertes, he was fantastic! I am never disappointed with my visits to the office on Plantation road, Blacksburg. He was very comforting, and professional. He did a breast exam, and made sure to talk to me through the entire exam. We set up Mychart with Carilion, and I love that feature. All my doctors are connected and in touch. I will continue to use him as my primary doctor after a successful first visit.

Getting into see Dr. Mertes is a nightmare but once you get in he is very knowledgable and also willing to learn along with you. He also makes sure to update your chart with items that occurred in between appointments.

Carilion is inept. Staff very unprofessional and wait time over 45 min's...go elsewhere....doc himself fine

Yes, you have to wait, but it's worth it. The nurse was knowledgeable, helpful, and kind. Dr. Mertes was all of the above and then some. He was thorough, had great theories (I'm a complicated patient who has been through many doctors because they gave up), and knew what blood tests to order (which got done right away at the lab in the office). He also recommended a neurologist, and said he would call him personally so I could get an appointment ASAP. Amazing! I'm so happy to have found a wonderful primary physician.

Treated me just horribly. He didn't seem to know what was wrong on first visit so he ordered tests. After I got results from his nurse I spoke to an MD I knew (in another state) about what questions to ask. Out of state MD suggested I ask Mertes if the problem could be "condition X". He replied "It could be a brain tumor." I repeated the question. He got up and walked out of the room and said "I'm not an idiot you know." I find this behavior to be very unprofessional.

Great guy !! Have a chronic pain problem and have NEVER been jerked around by Dr. Mertes. Always listens, takes an interest and is helpful.

Dr OK, long wait for office visit, Carilion billing unbelievable...have not credited my account twice after being paid...then sending repeat notice's even after contacting them
