I was lucky enough to be seen by Dr. Van Zanten when I landed in the ER department of the University Hospital. After years and years of chronic anemia, abdominal pain and bowel bleeds he was the only doctor who decided to take a different route in assessing my situation.
He saved my life. He is genuinely concerned about his patients. He is not only interested in the physical pain of bowel disease but the mental toll it takes on a patient and their family. He is truly one of a kind!!!!

Dr. Van Zanten is by far the best doctor I have ever seen. He saved my life! He was the first doctor that made me feel like a human and not a number. He is caring, kind and knowledgeable. I suffered from severe ulcerative colitis and he didn’t think twice about taking me on when I came to the emergency that day. I traveled 3.5 hours to see him and he respected that. He would come see me during my infusions so I didn’t have to make double trips to the city, he would even call me at time to discuss my health! He never sugar coated things and told me my options. I could go on about all the amazing things he has done for me but I would run out of room before I ran out of reasons on why he is the best G.I out there.

I fully believe Dr. Van Zanten saved my wife's life after she was continually mis diagnosed by other doctors and hospitalized with what ended up being severe ulcerative colitis and life threatening conditions.

My wife is in the care of Dr VanZanten. He is, by far, the best doctor I have ever dealt with for myself or with my wife. He goes above and beyond the call of duty and is no nonsense but is also very kind, compassionate and very knowledgeable.

Almost as if he takes what he does personally. Will do what he has to to get the information he requires at the shortest notice. Answers emails ASAP, even though he must be extremely busy. Very friendly, interested listener and will stick with you, I have never been brushed off. This man is what you would hope for in any doctor, whether it be a family or specialist. I have been blessed, I may not have the cure at this point in time but we are giving it our best.
