Professor Maher is a knowledgeable expert and leader in his field. In my dealings with him over the years, I have always found him to be clear, concise, and direct in his manner, analysis, diagnosis, and explanations. He does not beat around the bush. He uses his experience and excellent skills, and his ability to focus, and problem solve forwards in an organised manner. He takes time to explain the expected outcomes versus risks and does address any concerns and questions raised. He listens to these attentively and the quality of his deep expertise and knowledge is evidenced in his incisive quick responses. He is passionate about his work; surgery and post-surgery care have not been a problem. Be prepared to do your bit. Thank you, Professor Maher.

I had the displeasure of this person RUIN my life. I was referred to him at the RBWH after another surgeon at the RBWH botched my prolapse & hysterectomy surgery the year before. For a person that is dealing with women who are very much fragile his bedside manner was atrocious. Arrogant, rude and dismissive with not one ounce of empathy for what I was going through. Of course I am a mesh injury patient due to him. When I was referred back to him by my very diligent GP who suspected I had mesh injury symptoms, he blamed my symptoms on me being obese. He wanted to prescribe me a medication which causes severe constipation which would put further strain on my pelvic floor and when I questioned this he was entirely dismissive. I refused the medication and asked for an alternative treatment and said further surgery. I left the appointment in shock and tears. I went back to my GP the following week and he referred me to phyiso which you would think a surgeon touted as an expert in this field would know about. Years later to my again complete shock, after investigation by the mesh injury team down at the Gold Coast, it was discovered that I had THREE pieces of mesh inside me instead of just the one piece of mesh that I had given consent for. They could not understand why one piece of the mesh had been put in by him because it is now piercing my bladder AND there is nothing in the surgery notes by him to explain as to why this mesh was inserted. By me not consenting to those two other pieces of mesh this is assault. I could offer a whole slew of expletives as to what I feel about him but my warning is do not under any circumstances be tempted to let this man touch you as he has no respect for women.

He is well known as a butcher. Ruined many women's lives who have been left with avoidable further injuries from mesh removal. Any 'surgeon' who believes in, or performs partial mesh removals, should be de-registered. Arrogant misogynist. Beware

I cannot extend my appreciation sufficiently enough to Professor Maher for what he has done for me. I suffered pain and discomfort in silence for over four years and could not understand why I was in so much pain. The pain was so intense during intercourse that it made it impossible in the end. I also felt terribly embarrassed and felt a loss of dignity due to incontinence. In 2009 I had a prolapse repair, hysterectomy, and bladder repair, where mesh as inserted to support the urethra, by another surgeon in NSW. The incontinence I experienced at that time disappeared but started to return 4 years ago and has continued to worsen since then.
I was totally shocked following an internal examination by Professor Maher to learn that the internal pain I was experiencing was being caused by the mesh that was inserted in 2009 to address my incontinence. It had come to the surface and was cutting into me. I was advised by Professor Maher that this was becoming a well-known issue for women who had had this type of mesh inserted and it had to be removed. (On research I later learnt that there have been worldwide legal cases concerning these meshes).
Professor Maher removed the mesh, which is a difficult and challenging procedure however, he was successful in removing mine fully. I am incredibly happy to report that I am no longer in any pain and feel the best I have in an awfully long time. Unfortunately, though at this stage the incontinence has worsened, which makes sense given the mesh supporting the urethra has been removed. After follow-up consultation with Professor Maher he has advised that further surgery is now required to address and treat the incontinence once things heal. As far as I am concerned, I cannot speak highly enough of Professor Maher. He is so skilled at what he does and an expert in his field. I have full confidence in him and trust his advice. He takes the time to address any questions or concerns you may have and explains things, so you understand what treatments are available and the expected outcomes. If you have similar problems to what I had, do not put up with the indignity and pain any longer, talk to Professor Maher!!

One particular day I decided anxiety, embarrassment and isolation had been a passenger on my journey far too long. Besides they scratched the upholstery with their sharp finger nails! The next day I offered a ride to far nicer travellers called confidence, control and intimacy who filled the car with joy, engagement and participation. Thank you Dr Maher for your skill and understanding during this journey.

The doctor insisted on an treatment regime that as a patient I was not comfortable with. He did not provide any other options in terms of medication that I could take, or other types of treatment other than this one he was recommending. When I spoke to other people with my condition some said this treatment worked but the majority indicated it caused them more pain, or did not work. Hence why I did not want to try it. I was frustrated other treatment options were not investigated.
