Dr. Akhtar is wonderful. He is incredibly easy to talk to, very knowledgeable, and obviously invested in his patients. I feel he a bit liberal with prescriptions, but I also hate taking pills, so that could just be me. However, the staff has been awful since day 1. TERRIBLE. There is one young lady that is very helpful, and friendly! The rest of the staff ranges from unprofessional to miserable to downright ornery. I've been made to feel incompetent by them MANY times. I've NEVER had a pleasant experience with them. Our appointments also take about 2.5 hrs on average. I'm never taken back at my appointment time, which I understand happens. But I'm consistently taken back 1 hour after my appointment time, then proceed to wait in the examination room for 1-1.5 more hours. It's completely unacceptable. I love Dr. Akhtar, but I won't be returning after being with him for 3 years.

One of the best Internal Medicine Drs! I am in the Health Field and I can tell you that he listens to you and will make sure you will get the right diagnosis. He discovered that my son had Diabetes during a yearly Physical. He listened and ordered the correct tests! Excellent!

I never got past his bad staff and incompetent office manager Tammy . you can never reach a live person when calling, always going straight to a v/m. If your lucky you will get a return call 2 days later. also over heard the office manager makeing rasicst and volgur remarks to her patients while they where in the same room. Very childish unprofessional staff Dr Akhtar surrounds himself with. This made me and should any person re think using this facility for their medical needs.

Long story -last year, he irresponsibly prescribed me 70mg of Vyvanse at first appt. He also told me I had dyslexia. He'd only sat with me for 10 minutes! I had gone there bc I wanted dr with no parking deck that could check my thyroid. Well he checked everything! Then I tried to call him to tell him the Vyvanse was making me high and I'd suddenly drop into a depression each night. No one would return my calls! I drove to the office and banged on window when they were locked during normal biz hours. Nurses had me come in and explained Dr. was on a trip. I told them I needed help with what to do to stop or lessen amt of Vyvanse. I specifically said I was NOT suicidal! Behind my back, they called ambulance and next thing I knew I was in a psych ward! I left that day against orders, tossed Vyvanse and got some real help. He is too liberal with script pad IMHO. His mistake cost me relationship with my psychiatrist and alot of money for emergency room.

Really nice man--very caring and likable and very professional in general, however, REALLY poor knowledge and understanding of medicine. Based on my experience, I would not go to this doctor again or recommend him to anyone.

Due to Dr. Akhtar's inability to complete my FMLA forms in a timely manner, I lost my job of 25 years. Now that I have no income or insurance, his office will not return my calls. I've left numerous voice mails requesting he call in my Effexor to my pharmacy. Effexor is an antidepressant and you are not supposed to just quit taking it. I've only asked him to do this until I get some type of insurance coverage set back up. My pharmacist has also called Dr. Akhtar's office and left messages regarding the Effexor. The doctor's office has not returned any calls to anyone. Dr. Akhtar is aware of the dangers in discontinuing an antidepressant without being weaned off it. To top everything else off, I've received a bill from his office for over $600.00 which I have no idea what the charges are for.

Great doctor. I was a patient of his for 4+ years and trying to work around the fact I am no longer local to Birmingham. In current lingo, it would be safe to say this medical professional "Rocks!!"

I have used Dr. Akhtar for at least six years now and have never found a doctor so helpful and will take the time to talk to you about everything that is worrying you. I hate to see him leave UAB in Hoover because I am sure I am getting the very best quality available to me. I hope to see him open his own practice in the very near future so that I will be able to use him again even if I have to change my insurance and it cost me some out of my own pocket. You can't ask for a better Doctor than Dr. Akhtar, and even though you have to wait sometimes a couple of hrs it is well worth it because you know he is showing the patient before you the same time and quality care....This doctor does care.

Dr. Akhtar is the very best doctor I've ever been to and it saddens me to know end that he is no longer at UAB and I can't use him again until Jan when I'm allowed to change my insurance. At times I just don't know what I would have done without this doctor. I've ever not once minded waiting on his as I know he is showing the patient before me all the time and attention he shows me when it's my turn. UAB lost a wonderful dr when they lost him. I rated him as and excellent dr because he always explains everything to me in detail.
