Biography
Dr. Carl Dettwiler was born and raised in the northern part of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Family vacations introduced him to the Oregon Coast, Wallowa Mountains and traveling through Lewiston to visit Grandma in Arlee, Montana. Memories of Lewiston include the Lewis-Clark murals on what was the old Safeway building. Dr. Dettwiler graduated from Walla Walla College in1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He completed medical school in 1981 at Loma Linda University in Southern California. He choose Kettering Medical Center/Write State University in Dayton Ohio for his internal medicine residency. Following his residency, Dr. Dettwiler continued with his gastroenterology fellowship at Kettering Medical Center which he completed in 1986. After completing medical school, residency, and fellowship, Dr. Dettwiler felt like he was coming home to the Northwest when he accepted a position to practice gastroenterology at Valley Medical Center in August of 1986. He was pleased to find the history murals still on the Safeway building. Dr. Dettwiler joined the active medical staff at both Tri-State Memorial Hospital in Clarkston and St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston in 1986. He has served on several medical staff committees at both hospitals. Dr. Dettwiler served on the board of directors at Valley Medical Center for many years. In 2005, he joined Dr. Michael Parent and Dr. Murray Larsen to start Lewis Clark Gastroenterology. In 2013, after careful consideration of the options, Dr. Dettwiler chose to preserve independent, physician-owned practice of Gastroenterology as this deemed better for the community. Dr. Dettwiler’s wife Medgy home-schooled their four children including twin daughters Liesel and Heidi and sons Peter and Hans, who are all now grown. Dr. Dettwiler enjoys camping and backpacking in the Wallowa Mountains and rafting down the local rivers. Dr. Dettwiler specializes in general Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He has a special interest in preventing colon cancer. He also encourages his patients to have adequate exercise and a healthy diet to reduce the risk of lifestyle related diseases. He is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, Idaho Medical Association, American College of Gastroenterology, and MGMA.
