Dear Person in Search of a Psychologist,
Finding a good psychologist is very difficult. However, John Gross is a superb psychologist. I have known him for over 10 years and during this time, I was able to successfully overcome a number of issues that affected me professionally and personally.
While I tried other psychologists, I always felt that I am certainly the smarter one in the room; they were trying to make me fit me in some box/construct they were comfortable with. This is NOT going to be the case with John Gross who will easily match and/or surpass the smartest patients; he will adapt his approach to your needs, strategise based on his extensive experience, knowledge of behavioral psychology, and keen observation skills. I’ve experienced this throughout my time working with him.
Additional benefit of a well educated psychologist like John Gross, is the fact that he simply knows a lot more than just psychology. As an immigrant I was able to rely on his understanding of the context I was referring to; I did not have to educate him (on my time) about cultural or socio-political reality outside of the US. Instead, he was able to understand me as a patient and use his extensive knowledge to help me. As an artist, he not only asked me to draw and create to express myself, but was able to bring up and suggest artists for me to study and talk about.
I particularly felt that his science-based behavioral approach was especially effective on many issues, from depression, low esteem, professional life, grief counseling, and divorce. Because we worked together for a long time, I was always pleasantly surprised how much he remembered from the range of our sessions spanning years; it meant to me that there is a grand strategy invisible to the patient, that he is connecting facts, experiences, and my reactions from the past into a specific method concoction that was best needed now.
Another part that I love about his practice are his dogs. Dr. Gross used dogs in his therapy sessions with me to help me open up, become more comfortable, and neutralize anxiety. When I was sad or crying the dogs sensed it and came over to cheer me up. It’s like you get two four-legged assistants as a bonus.
My wife used Dr. Gross’s services (that’s how I connected with him) for her severe case of OCD. Under his watch, she was back on her feet in record time. She literally was unable to function at home or go to work because of her OCD. Dr. Gross guided her to full recovery and she is back to her pre-OCD self.
Last benefit I must mention is Dr.Gross’s textbook knowledge of medicine (including the body and medications) and how medications affect the patient. While I would make it EXPLICITLY clear that he is NOT a psychiatrist, my actual psychiatrist often agreed with and acted upon Dr. Gross’s observations and recommendations. He works very well with other medical professionals and communicates with them to your benefit.
Two small complaints (which I’ve shared with him and he was able to adjust for me) were: 1) that his help is not the cheapest and he does not take insurance. However, it is well worth it if you want quick results and someone who will be laser-focused on your entire personality and specific issue at hand. 2) I asked him to provide more frequent formative assessments of my condition as I progressed.
Good luck to you. Finding a good psychologist is extremely difficult, but you should stop searching and give Dr. Gross a chance to help you.
Sincerely,
Dr. Gross’s Former Patient
