Dr changed which part he wanted to operate on from one visit to the next - not sure how confident I am now. had the surgery - has no compassion for pain level. Staff is terrible and if the nurse doesn't like you she will leave you waiting and send half of your Rx's to a pharmacy you don't even use - rude - no one ever answers the phone - you always have to leave a message. sometimes they call back but not always and not promptly. was told 8 weeks for surgery didn't schedule it for 12

I was having significant pain in my right hip and thigh and in October 2019 I went to see Dr Kastrup. X-rays taken at Dr Kastrup’s office showed bowing of the femur and the end of the implant pressing against the side of the femur. For some reason he sent me for a bone scan. After the test I saw Dr Kastrup and he told me I did not need surgery. Still in pain I saw three orthopedic doctors (Including the doctor that did my previous replacement at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NY) and they all agreed that I did need a hip revision and without it, I was in significant danger of fracturing my femur.

If Dr Kastrup did not want to do the surgery, he could have told me to see another doctor. Instead he told me I did not need the surgery. This put me at risk for a fractured femur, and many months of pain and reduced mobility. I had the surgery in October 2020 and I am recovering well.

Either Dr Kastrup showed a total disregard for my health and quality of life or he is incompetent.

This doctor did a knee surgery for me, thought it was going to be one knee and day of surgery the worst knee was put on the back burner and I came out with stints up and down the leg with an explanation "was a mess." Never healed or worked right, a doctor in the same office tell me, "it looks like a wrong knee was installed-usually the one I had was used on a second replacement. I have suffered so much pain and
require a much larger surgery and recovery time to make it right. I have lumps up and down my leg, horrific!

Dr. John J. Kastrup's response
We are sorry to hear that you are having a hard recovery. From the comments provided, this type of replacement is used in repeat knee replacement and also complex first knee replacement when there is bone loss, weak bone, and/or weak ligaments. If you would like further explanation, or if there is anything we can address for you, we would be happy to do so. We stand by the high level of care that we provide at Nevada Orthopedic & Spine Center and are here for you, should you need us.

Great Dr. Had a torn meniscus repaired on 7/25. Went to post op appointment and he told me he also removed a torn piece of cartilage from same knee. Hardly any pain after operation. By post op appointment two weeks later, almost full mobility in knee. This was surprising since I am 67 years old and expected a long recovery. I was even release to use the gym. Wonderful bed side manner, Very personable.

Explains in easy to understand language. Welcomes questions. Does not limit your time for office visits. Surgery was very successful and recovery was faster than expected. For the first time in six years I can now walk pain free.

Based on the reviews below he must have went back to school since I dealt with him in 1998 in Erie, PA. He has totally ruined my life. He used the wrong size (too small) part on the upper part of the replacement and then also drilled at an angle. I am in constant pain and will NEVER forgive him for the butcher job he did and the doctors after him who tried to fix his mistakes by covering for him. I would not recommend him on a knee replacement if he were the only doctor in the country doing them. On the plus side - he has a great bedside manner.

Patient's update
I am sorry that you feel this way and note that this is a review for an event that occurred 18 years ago. It is unfortunate that you are having difficulties as this is not the normal outcome of this surgery. There have been many changes and advancements in joint replacement over the years that have greatly improved outcomes and patient satisfaction.

I am very pleased with both of my knee total replacements done 8months apart and would heartily recommend Dr.Kastrup to any of my friends and family. He shows caring and concern for all of my questions and was very patient over my concerns of inflammation which took time to heal as he predicted. Doreen in particular answered all questions in a timely manner and reassured me many times. I would not hesitate to use the good doctor again in the event of hip surgery. This is a very professional group and for the first time in four years I do not have any arthritic pain in either of my knees. Thank you for being able to walk again.
