My children have been seeing Dr. Shmalo at Avon Peds. since their pediatrician left the practice (3 visits total). Dr. Shmalo is quick to want to try to take my children off of their meds that their previous pediatrician has had them on for years for allergies, asthma, etc. Their ENT is also overseeing them and is not in any way ready to take them off of the meds. Also, Dr. Shmalo is not kid friendly. He doesn't relate to the children. He spoke to me about my child's weight in front of my child. He examined the childrens private areas at their annual appointments and was not gentle, as their previous dr. was. Both children cried for approx one hour after leaving the drs. office. We have since switched pediatricians.

Dr. Shmalo is one of my favorite, if not my favorite Dr. i have taken my children to. He always takes all of my concerns very seriously and different than the other reviews, is VERY good with interacting with my children. They get excited and Love going to see Dr. Shmalo. I would recommend him to ANYONE who needs a pediatrician.

Dr. Shmalo seems very knowledgable, but hesitant in some areas. As a new patient, my son had three prescriptions that needed to be filled and Dr. Shmalo refused to fill two of them. Instead, he referred my son to specialists. On the other hand, he aggressively treated a problem that my son had been having for a long time. Other doctors passed over it or ignored it and it turned out that it could have led to very serious problems for my son down the road. Finally, he tends to be a bit snappy at my son when my son doesn't answer the questions that he asks the way that he wants them answered. My son is 15 and has ADHD. He has trouble communicating properly and Dr. Shmalo just snaps at him instead of working with him. We've only seen him twice, so far. I haven't decided whether to continue seeing him long-term, but I gave him four smiley faces because of his aggressive action on my son's problem, where no other doc had ever seen a need to look into it.

Dr. Shmalo is very knowledgeable. He does seem a little timid when it comes to approaching children and interacting with them he often stands back and simply talks to parents. He does go above and beyond by makeing follow up calls after hours and keeping track of recent tests.
