After trying an acupuncture MD, my family doctor, an osteopath, and even a dentist for migraine treatment many years ago, I was guided to Dr. Messina by my gynecologist who said, "Just stick with him. He'll find the way." And he did. After which he also found the way for my sleep disorder. He's *very* thorough, brimming over with knowledge, funny, and genuinely caring: in short, my favorite doctor ever. And he even has full-fledged nurses in his practice, which happens to be a really nice touch in this era of medical-assistant-only staffing. The Best!

I see that Dr. Messina has received a number of five-star reviews on this site. I'm a bit surprised by this, since my experience with Dr. Messina has been the complete opposite. Perhaps at one time, Dr. Messina was an excellent doctor who cared about his patients' well-being. Maybe he has gotten sloppy in the last few years. Or maybe he feels he has earned the right not to try anymore. All I can say is that Dr. Messina is, by far, the worst doctor I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot. He has done more damage to my health than any person ever has. I regret seeing Dr. Messina and I regret following his advice. If I could take back one decision in my life, it would be the decision to walk through the doors of Michigan Headache and Neurology Clinic.
I saw Dr. Messina in spring 2019 for headaches I had been experiencing for years. The headaches were mild, but persistent and distracting. Dr. Messina could not explain my headaches, yet he tried to treat them, anyway, with a series of medications that did nothing but give me bad side effects. I should have stopped there (why keep seeing a headache "expert" who can't find a reason for your headaches). But instead I followed Dr. Messina's advice to undergo an invasive diagnostic procedure. Dr. Messina told me this procedure was safe and routine. He did not prepare me for what happened next: months of crushing headaches (much worse than before), cognitive impairments, and other weird and terrifying symptoms.
That was in June. This has been going on for over six months now. In that time, Dr. Messina and his office have done almost nothing to correct the damage done to me. Nor has he apologized. All Dr. Messina did was refer me to another specialist who I had to wait months to see. Dr. Messina did nothing to help expedite this appointment or find me an alternative (which, again, was to solve a problem caused by his own treatment).
I am still suffering the effects of Dr. Messina's poor judgment and subsequent negligence. Because of the pain and other symptoms, I am less productive in my work. I have had to turn down clients and my income has declined. I cannot exercise. I have broken many promises to my wife and others because I have not felt good.
I don't know if my life will ever go back to normal (by which I mean, the lower level of pain I was experiencing before seeing Dr. Messina). I am losing hope that it will.
I do not understand how someone can advertise themselves as a headache specialist when what they do causes more, not less, head pain in their patients. Dr. Messina's lack of care for me has caused me to lose faith not only in him, but the entire medical profession. Do not choose this doctor. He has ruined my life.

Dr. Messina is very knowledgeable. He has excellent training and knows what he is talking about. He may come off as arrogant but has a right to be for he was trained at the best of colleges. He runs behind, a lot, but gives each patient every minute they need at each visit. He has helped me tremendously. Their office answers phone calls quickly, not days later like my other doctors. He is compassionate and caring. He wants his patients to have livable lifestyles. He explains there is no "cure: for migraines and even the top notch researchers have no clue why they occur. He offers meds to treat the symptoms. It has taken several tries to get the right one fro me, but now I have less than 2 migraines a month! Massage/PT has helped too. Most of his office staff is awesome. Sometimes it is hard to make appointments, but probably because he is so good, he's booked. I'd recommend him to all of my family and friends.

This is the best place for headache care. Dr Messina in a skilled neurologist with the latest information about headaches and a surprising knowledge of medicine in general. He has helped me so much that I had to share my happiness with his care.

Dr Messina and his staff have changed my life. They are competent and truly understood my situation. They are a great team. I have a very complicated medical history and this is the one clinic which took the time to figure me out. I wish I had found them years ago.

My headaches were so bad that I was missing work. If not for that clinic, I would have lost my job. He took me off all the painkillers and that was amazing!
