Rude and condescending. Refused to provide a scheduled consultation, stating that he does not do hernia consultations, even though his Scripps page states that he diagnoses hernias and even though his assistant scheduled the visit as a consultation for potential hernia.

I went to see Dr. Takata for a consultation about a potential hernia. I found him through Scripps, where he advertises himself as "experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of ... simple and complex hernias." However, when I took valuable time off work to come and see him, he refused to do any diagnosis, saying that he does not do diagnosis, only surgery, and that I should instead go to my primary care physician. If that's the case, why advertise yourself as being experienced in "diagnosing" hernias? And why allow your staff to book an appointment for a hernia consultation when you don't do consultations?

Scripps page also says the following about Dr. Takata: "It is his goal to provide a sense of hope and comfort. He feels that the only way to accomplish this is to listen thoroughly to the patient’s story with compassion and understanding, with the goal of forming a trusted relationship. From here he can provide a clear and detailed treatment plan. Dr. Takata also provides each patient with the same superior and competent treatment that he would hope for his own family." All of this is false. He does not listen to your story with compassion and understanding and he does not provide any comfort, only condescending remarks. If this is how he treats his own family, I’m sorry to hear that.

Overall, I wasted two hours and $55 for a 5-minute visit, where Dr. Takata just sent me away to go see my primary care physician for a consultation about a potential hernia. As such, I would recommend you avoid him at all costs.

This doctor was arrogant and rude. The first thing he said when he walked in was I was looking over your chart and tests and I don't know what you expect me to do for you. My thoughts...go f*** yourself there's NOTHING I will let YOU do for me.

Dr Takata is a BRILLIANT physician and a PHENOMENAL surgeon! He is kind, caring, compassionate and I've always had such confidence and assurance under his care. He has operated on me 4 times (RNY gastric bypass, cholecystectomy, & 2 diagnostic laparoscopies to diagnose severe abdominal pain in which he discovered and repaired intestinal hernias that eluded CT scans). He has always been attentive and compassionate about my post-op care and comfort and is very reasonable about prescribing post-op pain meds. Dr. Takata takes time to listen to patient concerns and addresses each of them in a positive, professional and patient-centered manner. He is direct and honest with patients regarding diagnoses and treatment plans. He is quick and prompt to respond to phone calls and messages. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Takata... I highly recommend him to anyone and trust him explicitly!!

I found Dr. Takata to be very knowledgable and caring. His post-op care is fabulous. He takes the time to get to know you simply because he cares. He goes above and beyond. Would definitely recommend him!

Dr. Takata sell bariatric surgery by being the most personable surgeon you have ever met. However, once he's done his operation, he's done with you. His staff is apologetic about his treatment of patients post-op. He does not believe that people experience pain differently and (in my opinion) dangerously under prescribes medication for pain. He does not remove the pancreas, which causes post-op problems in 1/3 of bypass patients. After speaking with several other friends who had the same procedure, (if I could do it all over again) I would have it done at Sharp. Let me reiterate, his staff is kind, caring and wonderful. But whenever I was around Dr. Takata, he instilled fear and paranoia from his staff. He was, to me, a classic case of a surgeon who let his job get to his head. He needs to learn the meaning of caring for his post op patients and treat them based on individual needs ... not what he thinks they need.
