Dr. Staat is amazing. She really took her time with my issues and it changed my life forever. She was able to tell me things that some other doctors didn’t notice. I’m grateful I was sent to see her.

Dr. Staat's therapy practice has been closed since JUNE 2019. She is no longer seeing therapy patients. Please go to Psychology Today.com to find a therapist.

I don't usually do these kinds of ratings, but I am appalled that patients in a public forum can attack a doctor who can't defend herself then don't have the courage to identify themselves. I have worked with Dr. Staat on and off for 10 years due to severe childhood and later life trauma. I think that I have a comprehensive picture of her personality, treatment style, ethics, dependability, and commitment to my well being. I have always had the sense that she was walking with me, a companion on my healing journey. There was never any sense of her being one up and me being one down. She exposed me to many different types of techniques--traditional and otherwise, and I always decided what we would try and if it was effective. She was always assessing how I needed to proceed. If something didn't work or feel right, we tried something else. She has shown genuine empathy for my pain and a willingness to persevere even when treatment seemed blocked. And, I was always pleasantly surprised when, even after many years of treatment, she was still able to help me discover new things about myself. I suspect that she has no delusions of grandeur about her ability to be helpful to every patient who walks in the door. But, for those who find her a good fit, she can foster and create real transformations. She has defintiely buoyed me up during some of my darkest moments and been a solid and reliable source of support. Like most humans, she's not perfect. But, the positive far outweighs the negative. It has been a privilege to know her. She has taught me that therapy is a forum for real depth and honesty. I wonder how many critics and detractors have had the courage to share their honest feelings with her.

After meeting with five other therapists, all of whom scared me in one way or another, I was relieved to find a doctor who is ethical, amiable, and wise. Though therapy started out slowly, it became clear as time passed that she had some astute observations to make about my life patterns and how to shift things for positive change. Though some others may have a different opinion, I have been very glad that I didn't make a snap decision but took time to get to know this somewhat shy but clearly talented lady.

She seems informed on all the latest gimmicks in psychology, not that all of them are helpful.
I think she's more interested in herself than in anyone else. She didn't help me at all. I wouldn't recommend her.

Didn't like her at all. I also thought she has an arrogant attitude.

I wish I could find words adequate to describe my gratitude for the healing I’ve received from Dr. Staat. Her office is an oasis of calm, arranged to create a soothing space for troubled spirits. With patience, compassion and an impressive range of therapeutic techniques, she has helped me confront my painful past and shown me a way to a more joyful future. In particular, her use of emdr has guided me through many tangled and troubling memories, helping me to follow those incidents like a trail of pebbles to the sources of deep-rooted anger and sadness. She has provided me the tools to cope more effectively with crippling anxiety. If I have one regret, it is that I didn’t find Dr. Staat sooner. I can’t recommend her highly enough.

Dr. Staat is extremely arrogant. The very first time I had an appointment with her she talked with me in a very condescending manner and acted like a snob. On the phone she was rude and laughed at me when I asked her a reasonable question. I wouldn't refer my worst enemy to this woman. She is manipulative and a liar, also. I have noticed that the dates of some of the feedback on this site have been changed because it used to look like she had her friends leave some great feedback for her right after the negative ones. She's as phony as they come.

A crisis in my marriage catalyzed my first call to Dr. Staat. The foundation of my life slipping led to a crisis in my self: plagued by self-doubt, anxiety, and yet undiagnosed depression, I called Dr. Staat because of her credentials and her website: she appealed to me as an expert and in demeanor. Dr. Staat quickly diagnosed me with depression and anxiety; two weeks later bloodwork revealed I was suffering from an autoimmune disease whose side effects are depression and anxiety. I've been a long-term client of Dr. Staat's because, frankly, she helps me: in a chaotic, crazy, and often vengeful world that I have to negotiate as a mother, a teacher, and a wife, Dr. Staat helps me see with clarity how to take care of myself so I can bring my best self to all that I do. Her use of conventional talk therapy and unconventional mind-body work offers her clients various therapies; and together we choose which approaches work best for us. She is extraordinarily kind, extraordinarily compassionate, and extraordinarily smart; her incisiveness has pulled me out of numerous situations, helping me distill not only the key problems that I can't see (because I'm in the forest) and then how to best solve them. I've been particularly impressed with how Dr. Staat is always reading, both historical and current studies of psychotherapy; she goes to conferences, to retreats to study with experts and then to bring these new approaches to mind-body-spirit healing to Wilmington. I've referred friends in crisis to Dr. Staat; they have appreciated working with her. I believe Dr. Staat would be an exceptional psychologist in any major metropolitan city; that she has landed in Wilmington is extremely fortunate for those of us who also call this small Southern city home.

I came across Dr. Staat when I watched two of my friends get better as a result of seeing her. With her help, I got better, too. My long-standing depression lifted. Though I occasionally have small episodes, I have learned how to deal with them so they can recede. Dr. Staat created a safe environment where I could say what I really think and feel--the good, the bad, and the ugly. Sometimes I learned the most by talking to her about negative thoughts or feelings I had about her.
