I have been a patient of Doctor Michael Kaplan for 15-20 years, during which time I have undergone many surgical procedures including Trans Urethral Ablation (Tuna), and biopsy. I know him to be not only a superlative urologist but a kind and thoughtful human being. He is simply a good man, both professionally and personally. A jury has spoken, they have found him guilty of reusing surgical guides that were to be used only once. Because the evidence is there, I accept that verdict, but I agree with Dr. Kaplan's attorney, Mr. Gentile, that this case should not have been brought to trial. Less severe measures were more appropriate. To make an example of this good man, where there is no evidence of any patient having been injured is a shame. I also must make a comment on the kindness of at least one member of Dr. Kaplan's staff. After a certain surgical procedure it was necessary for me to wear a urine bag for about one week. It was both uncomfortable and sometimes quite painful when urinating. I will never forget the demeanor of the nurse (a female) who removed the urine bag. Her kindness and sympathy for my unpleasant and demeaning circumstance was truly remarkable.
When I left the office that day I made a point of writing her name in my notebook; thanks for being so nice to an old man, Tereece. Surely, we all make mistakes in our life, that's a given, and I'm sure that Dr. Kaplan will survive. And when he does, and returns to his practice, I'll be standing in line to return to his care.
