I had 3 hip replacements by Dr. H.. One was because of metal on metal infection.
He is at the top of the chart. The very best. HIs staff is first class. Connie Blake runs his
office like a fine tuned machine; she's great. Thanks to all: JDM

This guy comes across as the most knowledgeable Physician you will ever meet. Unfortunately that does not make him the most knowledgeable. I found him arrogant and a bit cocky, and turns out to be over-confident too. If you need the basic hip replacement then yes, he is your guy. Too bad for me my situation was not so simple and he did not look outside the box. He replaced my hip which is great, but he left me with a back problem. He changed his answers to my questions when he realized what he had done. If you want a Dr with with any bedside manner, he is also not your man. The term "unique personality" stated below doesn't mean nice nor personable. Meet with a few Drs before having the surgery done, in other words, get a few estimates!

It took 4 phone calls to get the information I was seeking. Then when I was ready to make an appointment, I was told the doctor had "opted out" of Medicare, and a knee replacement would be $7000. Why would a doctor opt out of medicare. I also have secondary insurance so why would I want a doctor who doesn't value my insurance.

I had my initial consultation with Dr. Hartzband in Feb. 2009. I was immediately impressed with his knowledge and confidence in his work. He took all the time I needed to explain the whole process in easy to understand terms. Had total replacement of left hip on 3/6/09 after suffering with joint pain for over 5 years. Surgery was done in AM, spent over night in hospital, saw Dr. H the next day and was released that afternoon. Pain after surgery was nothing compared to what I endured for 5 years. Now, two weeks after surgery I am walking with a cane, driving and have surgery scheduled for right hip replacement next month. I have consulted with other surgeons before seeing Dr. Hartzband and chose him by a WIDE margin over the others. Very efficient office staff and comfortable process throughout.

Dr. Hartzband gave me a total hip replacement 9 years ago. Have had NO problems. This doctor gave me my active life back. Thanks to him I have been able to climb mountains in Alaska and go on 10 mile hikes. I did not find him arrogant. He does have a unique personality and a good sense of humor. If you are in northern NJ and need a hip, he's your guy. He does hundreds every year. That's the kind of doctor you want, not one that does 1 or 2 a week. He is very well respected in his field and has published quite a few papers. I will need the other hip done soon and wouldn't think twice about him performing that one, too. He is very busy and sometimes is a little rushed. I found the staff-- PAs, X-ray tech and desk staff to be very friendly and helpful.
