If I could leave zero - or less than zero - stars, I would. This man who is supposed to lead with empathy and care is the worst form of human life. He belittles his patients, and he then tries to play it off as humor.

People don't come to Chi Mercy because they want to - this is the ONLY option in the area. When you call your patient names and make INCORRECT assumptions about them, there will be consequences.

When a patient is in need of care, in need of a doctor that can address and treat the problem, you step up. You don't call names; you don't make fun of the patient's history and their condition. You follow the Hippocratic Oath and HIPAA laws and DO THE RIGHT THING!

Dr Brickners been my doctor almost 17years. Prior to seeing doctor Brickner a Nephrologist had found some abnormalities, I was sent to an Endocrinology Specialist in Eugene. That Endocrinologist gave me a diagnosis, several medications, then told me to find a local doctor to continue to treat me...my Nephrologist suggested Dr Kurt Brickner to be my Internal Specialist. She was on a medical board with him and stated he was smart, great doctor with great bedside manner and she trusted that he would be the best doctor to suite the medical needs at that time. Several months of the treatment the Endocrinologist had me on I started having problems, Brickner figured out I had been misdiagnosed. I had now been in and out of hospital and ultimately had to quite my job due to decline in health. Brickner had been trying and trying to contact that Endocrinologist for questions he had regarding why he had me on some of the medications, doses and treatment he had me on, along some missing tests I needed to have had to get the proper diagnosis. Brickner tried and tried to contact that doctor then when he finally got ahold of some office person they stated the doctor had moved out of the country. No joke! Dr Brickner had to start from the beginning. I had to be tapered off of the medications the Endocrinologist had put me on which took few months. These months were aweful...I had withdrawals and it made me really sick. Dr Brickner was extremely diligent in this process and I had weekly appointments, bloodworks and some hospital stays to make sure I safely was being weened off of these medications. Once got off of them then all the testing had to be done from the very beginning and during the time Brickner did extensive research and set up all the correct testing we needed to get done to find a diagnosis. From the beginning he ALWAYS listened to me, believed me and never passed me off to see a Psychologist or Nutritionist. Dr Brickner got all the bloodwork and tests done to diagnose me. He then sent me to Rochester MAYO Clinic... OHSU, UCLA...none of them gave me anymore information then doctor Brickner had already given to me or tested me for. He had ALWAYS been very knowledgable doing research and passing all this information off onto me to help understand what was going on, what treatments I would do and what we could expect. As years went by more of my organs started to be affected and have problems. This very rare disorder seems to be taken hold by other organs just finding more disorders and not just one main diagnosis. We treat symptoms as they come. My organs now do not function as they should and medical interventions have been taken to keep me as healthy and out of the hospital as possible. I have two children and a husband and family whom have really been affected by my health and are a major important support for me. Dr Brickner has always been sensitive to this and is great with my kids and family. He has always explained, answered all questions I have regarding health, tests, treatments, surgeries. He also makes sure he is directly and ALWAYS involved in any specialists new treatment plans, new diagnosis' and helps make surgical plans hospital stay recommendations with my Specialists to make sure that my disease/disorder is not forgotten and maintains priority and take steps to ALWAYS keep me from going into "CRISIS", which could be deadly for me. I TRUST Dr Brickner, he makes sure I am well taken care of. He has always sent me to Specialists when need be, contacting collegues from all over U.S to see if any of them have any new suggestions of treatment for me. ALWAYS trying to see if anything new out there for my treatments. Excellent bedside manner, he and his office staff are ALWAYS great, helpful and care about their patients. I have NEVER in all these years had any issues with Dr Brickner or any of his office staff. Thank You Guys for such great care and concern. Our area needs more doctors and office staff like his in his office. THANK YOU & GOD BLESS.

Dr. Brickner and his staff are rude and uncaring. Completely inflexible with very reasonable requests. They made a mistake but refused to do anything to repair the mistake.

THE FOLLOWING IS A COPY OF THE LETTER I SENT TO DR. BRICKNER EXPRESSING MY DISSATISFACTION WITH HIS SERVICE AND HIS OFFICE STAFF:
On May 5, 2016 my husband contacted your office and spoke to a member of your staff named Debra. He was calling because a refill of his prescription was ordered incorrectly. My husband has been receiving this medication every two weeks since September 2015. The mistake was that the refill was ordered as a monthly injection instead of every two weeks. Consequently, our mail order prescription service sent him three vials for three months rather than six vials. My husband explained to Debra that the prescription service was going to charge another $20 co-pay for the additional three vials of medication. Debra told my husband that when she requested a renewal of the script from our prescription service, she “assumed” it was for monthly injections because most of your patients receive these injections on a monthly basis. I am not sure how she missed the fact that all the previous prescriptions since September 2015 for my husband’s medication indicated biweekly administration. At any rate, after learning how the mistake occurred, my husband requested that your office cover the $20 prescription co-pay since it was due to an error made by your staff. He even suggested that at his next appointment, scheduled for this Monday May 9, if he were not charged the $18 co-pay for the office visit, the problem would be resolved. Debra said, “That’s not going to happen,” and even went so far as to suggest that my husband should have indicated that the injections were every two weeks when he left a voicemail requesting a renewal of the original prescription. When my husband reacted to her accusatory tone, she hung up on him. A while later, Debra called to say that you were discharging my husband from your practice and that his appointment for Monday was cancelled.

Abandonment occurs when a physician suddenly terminates a patient relationship without giving the patient sufficient time to locate another practitioner. You are under an obligation to support the continuity of care for your patients, which means that you should not abruptly terminate a patient and cancel an appointment that is in four days. I believe that the standard is to provide care for at least 30 days after patient receipt of a termination letter. Additionally, your records should contain clear documentation of an ongoing pattern of unacceptable behavior prior to discharging a patient. This is definitely not the case with my husband. You have never had any issues with my husband—only Debra has today—and it would be difficult for you to prove that you have had problems with treatment adherence, appointment no-shows, abusive or disruptive behavior, or non-payment.

I expect a timely response to this letter. We are requesting a final appointment with you so that my husband’s recent lab work can be reviewed and his prescriptions renewed, including a corrected script for medication injections every two weeks. We will need time to find another provider, so this is a minimum of professional courtesy on your part. Also, we should not have to pay the co-pay for the office visit, per the reasons provided above.

DR. BRICKNER DID NOT EVEN RESPOND TO THIS LETTER, WHICH IS A GOOD INDICATION OF HOW LITTLE HE CARES ABOUT HIS PATIENTS.

I like Dr. Brickner because he does not try to pretend he knows what is wrong with you, and give you medicine you don't need.

Very thorough and helpful. Sympathetic. Willing to go the extra mile to diagnose difficult problems and willing to help find the best treatment, using the patient's input. Works hard to educate patients on how they can help themselves through non-traditional means and evidence-based self-help. Very satisfied with this doctor.
