My Father went after neck surgery. He was doing well in his recovery despite the fact that he was suicidal previous to the surgery from all the intense pain. He was disappointed he survived the surgery. He worked hard for the therapists. But the Dr. came in one day, and dad was acting strange. The Dr. called all the family in and told us we had to find another facility for him because he was not cooperating, was belligerent, and no longer doing as well in his therapy as he had been previously. It took them THREE DAYS to realize that he had a stroke, right in front of them. THAT was the reason for his relapse! But because his face did not slump, they did not recognize the weakness and inability to walk as stroke symptoms. So they did not get him back to the hospital in time. Put us all through he** scrambling to find a new place for him within their deadline of a mere few days. My brother and I took turns staying with him well into the night. He was so overdosed he was hallucinating and pulling out his tubes, and acting like a small child. We repeatedly pointed out to them that this absolutely was NOT normal for him. They insisted that they were not giving him any pain meds... to be overdosed. Two weeks into having to pay extra to have a person sit and monitor him day and night to make sure he did not pull out tubes or try to get out of bed and fall.... they finally told us he was getting "anti-anxiety meds". They had been overdosing. Pulled back the meds, he went back to normal and healed up well. 3 MONTHS of incompetent "mistakes".
The doctors, therapists, are awesome! I have been an RN for greater than twenty yrs and they supported me and worked with me for months after I suffered a brain injury in 11//2013. I had to work hard and take a graduate final, a paper, which they supported and continue to do so. By the way they had never had this happen before where a graduate student had a final paper due. I had to get permission from the president of the university and the hospital, then the team worked it into my plan of care and everyone supported me in completing my goal of finishing my goal. BTW I received an A- on the paper and a B in the class because I missed all the class discussions every week that could not be made up. Every time anyone came into my room, including any of the doctors, they would ask me "how was the paper coming along?" Anytime I have the option for rehab, I ask if I can go to Idaho Elks. You won't go wrong coming here, plus I was a nurse of twenty years and know what kind of care we should all get!!!
