I had to leave my 94 year old friend in HealthPark’s ER for tests before I going to RSW to pick up a neighbor. Before leaving I insisted that the ER staff locate the two pages of observations taken for referring my friend. The pages were lost somewhere between the ER receptionist and a nurse practitioner. They indicated that my friend had headache, dizziness and acute back pain in a kidney area. Papers finally found, I then explained to a young aide that my friend‘s hearing is impaired and she needed time to process the questions the aide was rapidly firing at her. The aide continued at the rapid pace while my friend attempted to reply. I heard a few replies I corrected from knowledge of my friend and her medical history. Three hours later I retrieved my friend. She said neither she nor the staff had answers for her ailments. Her discharge paper noted “flank pain and generalized weakness” . She complained that the staff seemed to indicate that her problems were “all in my head”. No surprise. The lack of bedside manner accommodating geriatric patients was obvious. Prescription for pain patches had been phoned to Costco pharmacy that said her insurance would not cover them until the prescribing doctor said why they were needed. The pharmacy could not get the ER doctor to return calls. When I called the ER I was told that ER doctors do not respond to outside pharmacy requests. My friend also arrived home with blood spots on her slacks and shoes resulting from carelessness when drawing blood samples. She was given a small bottle of peroxide to remove the stains when she got home. (It didn’t work. The slacks are at the dry cleaner). The bill for her three hours of tests: $13,542.15. She is asking for an itemized bill to learn if the total includes the bottle of peroxide. We suppose she could have gone to another hospital beside a Lee facility for tests. But wait!!! What hospital might that be outside of Lee’s socialized medicine monopoly that’s practiced without cost controls?
