By far the best hospital in Monterey County! It has deteriorated in excellence as the sheer number of people have overwhelmed its ability to serve everyone that walks through the door. I used to be able to go to the Emergency Room and get seen in a reasonable period of time, now due to the influx of people using the ER as their primary care provider, it's a long long wait. The Physicians are no longer working in their own private practices, and seeing their own patients if you are a patient in the hospital. Instead CHOMP assigns you a CHOMP physician for your stay and that's who treats you. Then you return to your real Doctor after discharge. It makes for a very disjointed treatment, and not nearly as good as when your own Doctor could come in and oversee your care. But it seems to be the way hospitals are doing it these days. The hospitalists (which is what they call the Doctors that practice at CHOMP) are ok. Not the cream of the crop, lots more foreign doctors than ever before. My mom was recently treated at CHOMP and we were faced with total stranger doctors telling us she was dying and she should go into hospice! Hearing that kind of news from doctors you have zero background with was pretty traumatizing. So the days are gone of any kind of personalized care. My siblings and I were literally ushered to a forest path and told to go look at the skilled nursing facility next door, and see if they had room for my mom, right in the middle of the meeting telling us she was dying!! She was moved over to that facility within 24 hours and they left her there to die. Not one physician has followed up with us. Her own physician retired right during this time. She now sees whoever Hospice sends in to see her, or the dr for the assisted living place. Medical care has really really dropped in recent years, but this is ridiculous. They led us to believe she had a few weeks to live. But that was in July and here we are in October, so I am of the opinion that because she is 88 years old and on Medicare, they are intent on just having her die as quickly as possible to save the government money. Don't get me started on what I think of Hospice Services!!!!! THEY really ARE wanting my mom to die and try every which way to give her Oxycontin to decrease her respiration and make her so out of it that she cannot eat or drink. If we did not have family over with her all day long, we would have lost her by now. We've had to eagle eye what meds they give her. All in all, I'm disgusted with medical care overall in America anymore. Obamacare has probably been the worst blow to our care system that we have sustained to date, but soon they will move us all to government medical care and then we really will be lost. Already we are seeing these new revised "guidelines" come into being, that state women no longer should have mammagrams annually, and breast exams done by an OB-GYN on an annual basis are not allowed to be billed to insurance anymore. They take 6 minutes to do, and Medicare (who sets standards as low as possible, and other insurers take their cue from Medicare for reimbursement standards) will no longer reimburse for that 6 minutes of care. Take a look around. The USA is overrun with a population that is getting free medical care, we don't have the resources to provide that care, so care must be limited for all of us, in order to care to be extended to everyone. That's communism for you. Of course, they don't call it that. They refer to is as socialized medicine. I pay hefty health insurance premiums monthly, I pay my Physician when I see him/her for my co-pay, I pay for all my medications, I am not wealthy, I just graduated from Graduate School and have school loans, and a low paying job. But I pay for my medical care. Why should I also bear the burden of paying for those that do not pay for their own care? I'm talking about illegal aliens and all people who just show up at a hospital, and get care. CHOMP was a great great hospital in its day. And it's still the best we have in the County. But it's a far cry now from what it used to be.
