I've been a patient in the past of The Melbourne Clinic, recently, I needed an admission, with an acute pshychiatric crisis and they refused to take me as a patient. They claimed "you have Epilepsy, we don't want to have to call an Ambulance if you have a seizure". (I've been diagnosed with Epilepsy since my last admission 10 years ago). I have FULL Top Private health coverage, yet I was discriminated against due to a medical condition that has a direct correlation to my mental illness, PTSD. I was forced to repeat my horrendous story, over and over again to various staff members in the intake office. This entire ordeal, left me in an even worse condition than at the beginning of the process from going to my GP and getting a referral for admission. I do NOT recommend for anyone who is dealing with acute symptoms to deal with the staff there or even attempt an admission to this facility. Neither do I recommend anyone who has any health issues to seek treatment or any of the services there. The Melbourne Clinic is an absolute SHAM. No wonder Healthscope is in trouble and closing down hospitals.

After being in the Heidelberg Repatriation, this place is a complete and utter disgrace! Same as other writers say. Food palatable but kitchen/dining closes after every meal. No sitting and talking to fellow sufferers from other wards. Yes they do push the drugs. Some of the nurses a lovely, but most a just cows that do the minimum. Nurses stations are hard to approach as they sit in their little office and chat. Hate to disturb them!! The place has many different psych people. Including drug addicts. I felt unsafe. Do Not Come Here!

Absolutely awful clinic. They say they are working to make the place diversity friendly, but as a trans person it has been a horrific place to attend. I was attending their trauma day program and feel ten times worse now than before I attended. Other group members have been transphobic and rather than the program coordinator deal with those individuals and the group as a whole the onus has been put on me. I've been put in a position where I've had to advocate for myself and been shut down by the group facilitator. The way they handled this situation is disgusting. Ironically the group I was in is called 'Safety and Stabilisation', but I felt extremely unsafe in this group, and when I voiced that I felt unsafe I got yelled at by another group member. This should not be happening in a place that is meant to be a therapeutic environment. It's the last place you want to be as an oppressed minority and a trauma survivor.

After having experienced the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital, then coming to The Melbourne Clinic, they are so different. The Melbourne Clinic is quite big and hosts a large range of psychological issues. The meals area is large and only open at certain times. The staff are very robotic and don’t do anything more than they have to. They do push drug a lot. Wouldn’t go back.

Total discrace. Loaded up on drugs. Nurse was unable to find heart monitor. Bed bugs in beds and tried to fool the mentally challenged that they were loosing their mind. Till the bed delivery van was noticed. Night shift nurses were cruel and forced medication I was not supposed to have. Psychiatrist was very unhelpful. A money making scheme. Did not listen when explaining I felt suicidal on the medication.

Below comment is completely correct. Psychiatrist here didn't even ask what medications I was taking before she put me on Valium, Valdoxan and Lexapro. I was already on low dosages of Xanax (scripted and non scripted) and Tramadol. Also found ants in the psychiatrists room crawling up my room and said psychiatrist said "ignore that". Also charged me, a 21 year old student $380 on medicare, for under 45 minutes.

It is quite literally a giant lab filled with human rats. They don't care about the patients, they only care about creating a cycle of dependance to ensure repeat clientele. A number of psychiatrists there have direct affiliations with pharmaceutical companies and are paid to 'trial' and publish papers regarding psychiatric medication use on unapproved conditions that show innapropriate use and dosage of dangerous substances.... seroquel anyone? Not to mention the lack of real supervision.. the amount of tablet swapping, illicut drugs and other activity that occur in this facility are comparable to some dark alley nightclub.

Very expensive. Cleaning staff are lovely, and classes are generally well run, and the food is palatable. Not all nurses, but many (both night and day) can be snarky, aggressive and downright rude when you express your symptoms, and will take your leave away on a whim. Many psychiatrists (if not all) have no qualms in over medicating, and neither nurse nor doctor are willing to discuss or admit possible side effects of medication. Any complaints about medication, bullying by other patients, staff etc can have the consequence of sedating you more with meds. Be careful. Honestly, the cleaning staff are more likely to be honest with you than them. TMS staff are lovely however. If you do find yourself here, stay out of the smoking area and attend all the classes. Do not be afraid to speak up about your medication and treatment. Understand that you have the RIGHT to be treated with both dignity and respect, and the RIGHT to refuse medication and ask for a SECOND OPINION. It is a voluntary hospital, and if you are suffering from drug induced psychosis (or what they label as an 'adverse drug reaction') detox properly. There is a detox and rehab unit there. Keep a log or diary about your medication and how you feel about your symptoms. This place is not a popularity contest and don't let anyone cajole you into being lectured and sedated. If you are not improving, there are other practices and clinics out there. Good luck.

There was no leadership on the Unit - on one occasion the mainly Agency staff weren't managing and a patient (who had been a Psych Nurse) had to calm patients and organise the staff! True!
