Psychiatric nursing staff working on inpatient wards are on the whole, discriminatory, unprofessional, punitive, unfriendly, and seriously lacking in contemporary psychiatric education. There is a profound absence of clinical ethical adherence, and frequently patients already vulnerable, confused, and traumatised are treated with disdain and atmospherics condemning some psychiatric patients as though mental illness where a moral deficit. The on ward nurses provide next to zero psychotherapeutic interventions, only venturing beyond the nursing station "walls of surveillance" to admonish, threaten or shame patients, wielding their unobserved power with odious ease. On the other hand, and it is an uneven pair of hands, many of the psychiatrists, doctors, and nurse practitioners practicing in psychiatry are reasonably good, some even outstanding, a few exceptional. If you make it beyond incarceration. I mean inpatient "treatment". Let's call it what it is. Many psych nurses employed at RPA for lengthy periods are not only incompetent, unethical, uneducated, and abrasive. They are plain abusive, and are supremely lucky to have escaped malpractice or legislative proceedings.
