Ratings for Dr. S Schwartz
I went to see this doctor for surgery options and was convinced that surgery was not necessary. I am grateful for his expert opinion.
Although wait time is long, when in his office he takes the time to fully assess and discuss the issues at hand. My son was followed by Dr.Daniel at the Montreal Children’s since the age of 3 and after 8 surgeries over the course of 10 years we were referred to Dr .Shwartz for his 9th surgery. We began seeing Dr.Shwartz at the Jewish General where last summer performed my son’s 10th surgery (he was 16 at that time) and it was a complete success and for the 1st time ever, my son said he could actually smell properly! Dr Shwartz has proven himself to be dedicated and compassionate in regards to my son’s condition and will forever have my gratitude!
I was refered to Dr Schwartz by my dentist after persistant pain after a tooth extraction. I waited for 1 1/2 hours in his waiting room. Once in the examination room he spent 5 minutes with me telling me I was not suffering from sinus problems but a migraine. He then proceeded to take a personal call and leave the room for at least 10 minutes. When he returned he dismissed my concernes and self knowledge of my own feeling that it was a sinus infection and referred me to a neurologist. I went to see the neurologist who concurred that there was no migrane activity. I got a second opinion from Dr Frankiel, who is in the same office and he sent me for a CT scan. Today I saw Dr Frankiel with the results of the scan and I need surgery to open the sinus canals that are totally blocked and suction out the congested cavities. Dr Schwartz is an ego centred Dr. who's barely focused on the patient in front of him. He is a horrible listener and was more invested in being right than compassionate and available for this patient.
The doctor should try with all his heart to treat his patients more equally, regardless of the day’s circumstances, regardless of the case each patient presents or the behavior each patient shows.. I respect and agree with many aspects of the rating posted on Feb 21, but then it shocks me how this experience has been so different from other patient’s experiences, including my relative´s one. In sum, Dr Schwartz should not be an amazing doctor with some and a terrible one with others.
Please read to the end. My first appointment with Dr. Schwartz started as a complete disaster. I had to wait 3 hours, then another half hour in the examination room. So when he finally saw me I was not happy. A bit of background. I have been suffering for years with constent congestion. I had been seen the year before with another ENT doctor (who is higher rated) who found nothing wrong, and gave me prescriptions to topical sprays. A year later I went to my wonderful GP, Dr. John Backler saying I needed a sevond opinion, and he referred me to Dr. Schwartz. Dr. Schwartz fully examined me. He found a tumour called an inverted papilloma. Two other ENT doctors didn’t see it. It probably had been growing for years, so I really don’t understand that. He took a biopsy and said they would get back to me. He took time to assure me it was likely not cancerous. He went through with me what the next steps would be. While the biopsy procedure was not pleasant, he was quite attentive and was obviously quite practised. While this was going on, I saw that another patient had got tired of waiting and left. I overheard the staff. Dr. Schwartz has been busy with an emergency and many issues. He was not wasting people’s time. He was doing his job. I forgot about my wait time after this. I had a CT scan and saw Dr. Schwartz again. The scan showed a smaller tumour than he thought. He sent me for an MRI After that was done, his staff worked with me to schedule an operating date. They were quite kind. I went in for my operation. Dr. Schwartz met me , and I was confident he would take good care of me. I had a 7 1/2 hour operation. It was supposed to be 2 hours. Believe it or not, the CT scan and MRI did not show the extent of the tumour. It was everywhere in my sinuses and passages. Dr. Schwartz took the time to get it all out through his endoscopic procedure. He is one of twenty in Canada that could do this operation. Two other scheduled operations behind me were cancelled. I hope they were not mad at him. He did everything right, not his fault. It is now just over two weeks later. My recovery has been amazing. I followed their instructions and experienced no pain in my sinuses. Yesterday he removed the packing and spacers. I can breathe! After years of breathing through my mouth, full of congestion, constant nasal drip etc, I am cured! I highly recommend Dr. Schwartz.
Dr. Joseph S. Schwartz might be very gifted as information from the internet might say, but he has close to no humanity, at least with his patients. He doesn't seem to know much about how to interact and communicate well with them. My mother had an appointment and unfortunately she spent no more than 5 minutes in his office. Not to mention that he was 1 hour late and that he would only look at his watch and the piece of paper in front of him. He pretty much suddenly inserted a device into my mother's sinuses almost, without letting her know in advance. He didn't seem to have any time to attend to her case and seems to have too many occupations. I am sorry for my mother and for the patients that he treats. In no way he was sweet or patient. During the 5 minutes, he talked almost non-stop and my mother had to basically interrupt him so that she could assimilate the information. Finally, he told her in a rather cruel way that there was probably no cure for her case. It's ok to be direct, doctors must deliver diagnoses in an accurate way, but the way information is transmitted can make a huge impact on the patient. Good luck.
Dr Schwartz operated on my sinuses, septum, and adenoids. I started off by seeing him at his clinic hours at the ENT specialty group to which we tried a bunch of different treatments to help my sinus problems. After running out of options and being tired of having constant sinus infections (over one year of chronic sinusitis), we came to the conclusion that surgery was best. Dr Schwartz has been the sweetest, and most patient Dr I have ever had. He reassured me every time I had concerns, answered all my questions and explained everything very clearly and made sure I understood every process. After my surgery, every post op appointment went smoothly and he really took time to answer all questions and concerns. I was always greeted with a smile and have had nothing but exceptional service from Dr Schwartz. I recommend him to anyone who is in need of help with their sinuses as Dr Schwartz specializes in sinus issues.
Extremely rude, was running back and forth into examining room, apologising for being late. I can understand running late, but then he was very impatient about taking information from me. Criticised his colleagues ( other MD's and what they had recommended for me in the past ) and suddenly without preparation stuck a tube up my nose from my side that squirted liquid which burned. When my arm reflex elbowed him, he scolded me for hitting him???!!! A student intern was in room and I am shocked that students are getting training from such rude doctors. He seemed to be annoyed by my case, non-allergic rhinitis with constant sores in my nose, and meds that don't help; seeming to indicate that as a highly gifted surgeon my case was not really significant to him and a waste of his time. He also told me to stop looking on the internet for information, Finally when I went to fill prescription he gave me, i discovered he had not written his name, ID number or strength of medication which came in 2 or 6 mg. Very scary that he's allowed to practice.
