Like others have said, he uses scare tactics and strong language to make his point. He is very conservative and would rather just go for a C-section than try for a vaginal birth. After he told me he didn't want to have a "dead baby" by letting me go full-term with gestational diabetes (yes, those words), I took everything he told me with a grain of salt. OF COURSE, he was on call when I checked into the hospital and used more intensely scary language that both my husband and the nurse were shocked by. Luckily, he was gone by the time I went into labor. I think he's a good doctor, but his bedside manner leaves a lot to be desired.

Have been going to this physcian for 20 years. He has a kind demeanor and is very patient. He always spends 1:1 time to review any questions and concerns.

I have been going to this practice for over 10 years and have enjoyed the staff and all of the Dr's (saw them all because you have to when pregnant so you can get to know one who will deliver- on call) I have been very luck that Ira was the first one I started to go to and he also delivered both my children. I could not be happier with this Dr, practice and Rex Hospital across the street!

He is an awesome doctor, very knowledgeable, very calming and easy to be around. When I am stressed he puts me at ease.

Had to wait 10 minutes in the waiting room, then 50 minutes in a drape in a freezing exam room. Then he initially mis-measured the baby on the ultrasound, and even once he corrected it, he miscalculated my due date, making it two weeks earlier. This then threw off my next three appointments, including the NT scan, which is time-sensitive. At this office, I either waited 45 minutes to check out (for a morning appointment) or an hour for the doctor (afternoon appointment), it takes forever to get someone on the phone, the insurance person is not helpful, and they gave me an inaccurate quote for the optional NT scan (half of what I was charged). I've switched to another practice for the remainder of my pregnancy.

I've seen this physician for years and he has always been eager to answer my many questions . Our birthing experience was wonderful. My husband was inpressed by the staff aat the hospital and Dr. Gaines himself. I would and have recommended this Dr. and practice to my family and friends.

Once he knew I am trying for a VBAC his demeanor changed. He pushed his agenda (which was a c-section) without discussing options with me at all and tried to scare me into it. I later found that he misrepresented a lot of information, exaggerating the concerns of VBAC and ignoring the concerns of major surgery. When I did ask for information to help me make an educated decision on the subject he wasn't forthcoming at all. He only gave his opinion angrily and ignored my desire for numbers and stats, treating me like an idiot. Hubby was shocked by his awful bedside manner, too. Really worried he will end up delivering my baby, as I know he won't even let me try for VBAC if he's in charge. Every other doc at his practice is encouraging me on VBAC, though, as long as I'm informed about the process.

Very knowledgable. Always had me come into his office to discuss my medical concerns/treatments after examination without being rushed. I think that he is a very good OB/GYN.

Poor bedside manner, uses scare tactics to try to coerce patients into C-sections. He delivered my 1st baby and then I switched with my next pregnancy because of Dr Gaines. Go to Physicians for Women in Cary instead!

I have been seeing Dr. Gaines for 6 years and he is an incredibly warm and caring physician. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
