Ratings for Dr. Joel Doctor
We were referred to Dr. Doctor by our family physician regarding my dad’s urticaria. We had to wait some time to get the appointment, but this doctor really worth the wait... Dad was suffering terribly from urticaria and it really affected his quality of life. No long term medication would help at all... Not only Dr. Doctor quickly ran all necessary tests, but he actually found the drug that worked like magic for dad... what a change was it for my dad and all of us in the family!!! Also Dr. Doctor was very persuasive in getting coverage for this very expensive medication for my dad. He have not rested until this finally happened!!! I can write so many wonderful words about Dr. Doctor, bit I will just say that his intellect, passion, professionalism and above all, his great desire to help the patient truly makes him an outstanding doctor.
Reception was friendly. Arrived within five minutes of appt and was seen immediately. Had a quick chat with Dr. Doctor (what a name!) and went over background. Had testing with nurse who was delightful. I’m not entirely convinced of the results as my symptoms don’t match the results and I will be seeking 2nd opinion.
This is my first time rating a doctor, but I felt strongly about rating my experience with Dr. Doctor, so here goes. I arrived early for my appointment, and was brought in right away, which was a nice surprise. I explained my symptoms to Dr. Doctor and he really didn’t have much to say in response, other than he would send his nurse in to test me. His nurse was lovely and very gentle when administering the tests on my arms. After 20 mins he came back in and said I have a buckwheat allergy, that’s it. I saw the hive on my arm, so I believe I have this allergy from his test, but I don’t think I’ve ever consumed buckwheat in my life, so this certainly does not explain my symptoms. He literally had nothing to say except “I cannot help you, go back to your family physician” while looking me straight in the eye. I was so shocked and disappointed. When I asked him what he thought could be going on with my health he told me it’s probably Lupus. Lupus! A grave diagnosis! This isn’t something you say off the cuff. I went back to my family physician and she referred me to another allergist. Turns out I have a mould allergy that was very simple to diagnose. And it also turns out I have been unknowingly working in an office with mould, which solves the mystery of my symptoms. The allergist who discovered the mould allergy sat and spoke with me for one hour to get a proper history. He asked questions, he was engaged in conversation, and he gave me simple solutions to dealing with the mould until repairs are done at work. This is much more than anything Dr. Doctor did for me, and he didnt even charge me for testing either.
We were referred to Joel with our daughter’s first time anaphylaxis to nuts He did a scratch test. Prescription for an epipen and told us allergic to hazelnuts an peanuts Fast forward 18 months with a new anaphylactic rxn... we cant see him and have to get another referral But he’s busy for 6 months Go to a new allergist. This one does blood work and a full work up. Not allergic to peanuts and is sad that this was even a diagnosis So you try telling a child that they aren’t allergic to peanuts after telling them they are. It’s unfortunate that this was even diagnosed and not properly done the first time I’m glad we sought out our own referral and didn’t want for this joker.
Brought my 3 sons to Dr Joel Doctor, and was very disappointed with his overall level of knowledge and discernment. His testing procedure is quite rudimentary and ineffective, as it tests only a few antigens and the skin break was inconsistent. He was unable to effectively diagnose an IgA anaphylactic allergy in a known lifelong case in my oldest son (has seen 2 other allergists in Calgary, both confirmed the severity of the response) or an IgG response (my middle son, also confirmed). When questioned, He seemed to have no knowledge of what an IgG allergy is and seemed to be much more interested in ending the appointment than providing any concrete knowledge or treatment. Furthermore, for the one severe allergy that he did confirm in my oldest son (egg) he does not offer any solutions for treatment of allergies such as exposure thereapy. Overall - I would say please avoid this “Doctor”
I am absolutely stunned by some of the negative comments I read on this page. In contrast, I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Joel Doctor. I have suffered most of my adult life (from about mid- 40's) from a seemingly very rare and in my case undiagnosed illness. My family doctors had never seen a case like this. In 2011 I ended up in emergency with severe facial swelling (at age 72). They treated it as anaphylactic shock and injected several doses of epinephrine but to no avail. After 12 hours in emergency they transferred me to internal medicine for observation for another 24 hours. II survived the episode and they referred me to Dr. Joel Doctor for follow-up. It was he who finally diagnosed the real cause of my illness as Type 1 HAE (C1-esterase deficiency). He has been my doctor and confidant ever since. I find him to be the most caring and thoughtful specialist I have ever met. Recently I had another episode. He suggested I go to FMC emergency, but while there he was willing to consult with the attending physician and called me back to follow up after I left emergency. He is not only knowledgeable in his field, but also a warm, caring individual. I feel very privileged to have him as my doctor., and I have absolute confidence in him.
This Dr told me I didn't have allergies (or that it was all in my head) after I was hospitalized for anaphylaxis. Tests for basic things and decides from there. Said it probably wouldn't kill me. GREAT. DONT GO HERE. Waited a year, saw him for 15 mins and it was useless
Within days of an emergency visit, we had an appointment for a consult. He diagnosed a very rare condition and is now very effectively treating my daughter. Her symptoms have reduced to the point where she only two mild occurrences in three months versus severe occurrences once or twice a week. As a clinician is very knowledgeable and patient-focused. I would highly recommend his practice of allergy/immunology medical assessment and treatment. He noticed during an appointment with my daughter that I had obstructed breathing. I attended a separate appointment and he diagnosed nasal polyps. He prescribed a treatment which was successful. Dr. Doctor is also now treating my chronic allergenic rhinitis. I have had issues for years with nasal obstruction. It is fantastic to breath more clearly. I am appreciative of his expertise and medical treatment. Overall, clinic is also very professional and helpful. So I have no hesitation in recommending this practice. Both my daughter and I have experienced a better quality of life from by from his medical expertise.
