Ratings for Dr. Elias A. Karkalas

I left this practice because I found it very difficult to get a referral to a specialist when it was needed. It required several phone calls and a lengthy dicussion with the doctor even though I was compliant with scheduling an appointment with him as requested before getting a referral. I have had to reschedule an appointment with a specialist on 2 occasions because the referral did not come through despite multiple requests. And it was very difficult to get a return call.
Dr. Karkalis is the best general practitioner that I have ever come across. He takes the time to explain things to you. He's always cognizant of your medical history and has a strategy in mind for your overall well-being. THIS GUY GENUINELY CARES ABOUT HIS PATIENTS & IT SHOWS! I was shocked to see a couple of complaints about punctuality- some people have their priorities backwards- Personally I have been a patient there for about 7 years; I've never had an unreasonable wait. It's been refreshing to go to a physician that is focused on me and not just going through the motions...trying to cram too many patients through. Ignore the nay-sayers- this guy is the real deal- a throw back Marcus Welby type...a gem.
I left this practice because I was tired of waiting 45 minutes or more. As someone else stated, I also waited even when I was the firt appt of the day. That it just rude, selfish and inconsiderate
The doctor is not of this world or at least he does not want to be. He is never on time and his staff is horrible. Well not all, but if you do ever go to this doctor, his one staff member..... D E B B I E...... is completly rude and loud. She never listens and should be fired. She is a very bad look for this doctors business or any place for that matter. Sorry, got off the subject. This doctor knows what he is talking about but that does not cut it. When is comes to returning calls...HE DOES NOT. When it comes to refilling medication...HE DOSE NOT. When it comes to getting a refferal...TOTAL NIGHTMARE. This doctor is a joke. How other patients and his other staff members deal with him ( and D E B B I E ) is beyond me. I and my family thinks this place should be shut down. FOREVER
This doctor always arrives late. The average waiting time to see the doctor is 45 minutes after your scheduled visit. He very seldom returns phone calls for emrgency situations. He does not talk to his office staff that much. Fails to call in medicine on time. I highly advise not seeing this doctor.
I have recently and very relunctantly left his practice. He is a fabulous doctor, excellent diagnostician, takes his time with each patient and it is usually fairly easy to get an appt. The reason I left is that I have to take certain maintenance meds and trying to get a refill is a nightmare. I have called 3-4 times and still no refill. I think if he hired a PA or a nurse practioner whose primary role was to handle prescription refills he'd be the best doctor in town. His staff is also very nice. No complaints there.
I have never waited more than 10 minutes beyond scheduled appt time. I've been seeing him for a few years after having a miserable experience w/another MD. Always takes time to listen and refers me to specialists/surgeons best suited for my condition. Does procedures most docs have the nurses perform. Tries to find the least expensive medication that will work and almost always gives samples if he has something available for my condition.
Dr Karkalas is brilliant. If you want great medical care, he's your man. Old fashioned, one-stop shop. Cures whatever ails you. If you're concern is punctuality or bedside manner, maybe not. It will take a visit or two for you and him to find a rythm, but after that, it's all good...he follows the beat of his own drummer, just listen for the beat and you have a very insightful Dr who will guide you to good health.
Good communication easy to talk to very understanding and knowledgeable in all areas. He gave me hope and faith with my fight against Cancer.
The only complaints I might have about Dr. Karkalas are about his punctuality and his bedside manner. I have had three 8 am appointments (the first patient of the day) and the earliest he arrived for any of them was 8:20 am. Otherwise, he is very knowledgable and helpful with regard to all inquiries. His office staff is very nice and polite, and I would recommend his practice if you don't mind that he will remain somewhat aloof at all times.
