I knew Professor Burrows for 26 years and found him to be very helpful, compassionate and an excellant psychiatrist.

I was a victim of Burrows' dismissive, cold and perfunctory ward rounds in Banksia House back in 2006. The woefully incorrect diagnosis and medication decisions he made based on a five minute interrogation in front of a room of strangers has continued to adversely affect my life everyday since. I understand that he was very good to his private patients and I am glad that he was able to help so many. I'm sorry to those who are grieving his loss. However, please don't dismiss the very real suffering he inflicted on his public hospital patients (I.e. his guinea pigs) when we were at our most vulnerable. He is a man, not a saint and he should be remembered as he was with all his lights and shadows. Please don't ignore us just because you had a different experience, none of us asked for this. We weren't asking for pills and a quick fix, it was take the pills or there is nothing we can do for you. Joys of public inpatient units.

Nearly destroyed our child with "heroic" doses of drugs Totally disregarded our concerns in the nastiest manner When we asked for a second opinion he berated us and told us " you will be back" The next physic dr took a very short time to state he believed that in incorrect diagnosis had been made, we never looked back after that.

Rest in peace. Graham Burrows mentored me , as his 'patient?' for 18 years. He stated , we will be seeing each other till one of us pops off. l am 62. One packet of innovane to help sleep when giving up smoking. Success. Cialis ( 4 tablets....halved ) as backup if need be, being single and infrequent testing of potency. Worked thru complex anxiety, stress, depression intellectually. No drug therapy. No pain, no gain . Change lifestyle if problematic. l knew another psychiatrist socially, and he often complained of having to dish out medication to people who desired a quick fix. He said trying to help people by explanation / understanding / self awareness etc , sadly often meant glazed, vacant responses, with little personal effort. Change, and painful thinking / analysis is hard for many people. Blame and failure to overcome difficulties finds scapegoats. Many psychiatrists / psychologists can lead the horse to water but ............ l have seen numbers of people choose 'the pills' rather than alter their lifestyles that are not balanced or questioned within. Of course , many people need medication to improve their lives, but, like most professions of today, psychiatry / psychology, is still in its infancy, much of it still in research and development phase. Much trial and error. Accept that, and appreciate there are many successes, that once may have destined people to a most shocking living existence, if they do in fact survive.

I sought treatment from Prof Burrows as a medical intern with severe anxiety as he was treating my father, also a doctor, at the same time. The next twenty five years of my life were completely ruined, until I finally got the courage to say to him that I was NOT coming back to see him. He stated"Oh You'll be back"" . Well, I did not go back, and Now I am on much lower doses of medication, my self- esteem is normal, and my relationship with my psychiatrist is strictly profressional. And, he spends 1/2 hour with me. Not 2 minutes in the morning to say " I'll see you tonight", followed by an evening visit were he pops by and says "I'll see you in the morning". I took too long to escape this mans clutches and worse, I even refered patients to him. He ruined so much of my life, I cant even begin to say. One consultation he was on the phone for the whole time , but wrote out a script for xanax and waved me away. I wasnt even on Xanax. My husband is still mad at me that it took so long for me to break away from this guy.
