What to Look for When Buying Reusable Face Masks

Multiple layers of cloth that include tightly woven cotton and polyester can be most effective.

The pandemic is dragging on, and no one wishes it to persist especially as we head into summer. Getting outside and enjoying the weather is paramount. So is staying healthy and safe while you do it. With crowds gathering at beaches and in the streets, it is a good idea to follow common sense health protocols and wear a mask when you go out. Yes, it is hot out there, and yes, masks are annoying. Who says the guy in front of you is totally healthy, however? He may be kind, but he could also be an asymptomatic coronavirus carrier. Protect yourself. Research shows that anywhere between 25% and 81% of people who have COVID-19 never actually show any symptoms.  There is also good evidence indicating those who are infected can transmit the virus to others before they develop any symptoms, if they do.

Where is the best place to buy your mask? You can buy disposable masks online, and there is also the option of investing in a cloth mask. Both work well, but buying a reusable mask can be a great idea for both you and the environment. You won’t have to worry about running out of supplies, and you can simply wash your mask in the sink and hang it up to dry overnight, when needed.

You want to ensure your mask is made in a way that will truly protect you. In Canada, the government is recommending all people who cannot stay at least 6 feet apart (2 meters) wear a non medical mask. In the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights the fact that surgical masks and N-95 respirators are needed for front line workers and that wearing a cloth mask is a good way for citizens to protect themselves

The CDC has an excellent video (45 seconds) in which US Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams provides instructions on how to make your own face mask from an old t-shirt and two rubber bands. Of course, if you are looking for something more stylish, you may be buying some. Look for masks that are made of multiple layers of cloth.

Researchers from the American Chemical Society found that a combination of tightly woven cotton and two layers of polyester-spandex chiffon- the sheer fabric found in evening gowns-was the best at filtering out tiny aerosol particles. This cloth construction performed close to an N95 mask in their study by filtering out 80-99% of aerosol particles.

Stores like the GAP, Old Navy, Roots Canada, and even Staples are now selling reusable face masks, which is helpful.

Your mask should fit snugly around both your nose and mouth. Ear loops can be more effective at keep things in place over time compared with ties that fasten behind your head. It is recommended you wash your face mask after every day of use.
