How to (Help) Avoid Getting Sick Before You Travel

Make the most of your time off by staying hydrated and clean.

Getting sick while on vacation isn’t the stuff of fond memories. It’s impossible to completely isolate yourself from all germs before you get in the car, or embark on that trip to the airport to catch your flight, but there are certain precautions you can take that may minimize your risk of spending the next few days in bed instead of on the beach.

According to many experts, washing your hands frequently is one of the best ways to help ensure you don’t fall sick. It’s been found that people touch their face about 3.6 times each hour. Your eyes, nose and mouth are the gateways to your body that bring in bacteria and bugs. It can be hard to remember to keep your hands from your face, but at least if they’re clean, you could reduce your chances of leading those bugs right to your front door.

Another step to take is to stay hydrated. Your nose is full of mucous, and this is your body’s natural defense system. When it dries out, your chances of catching a cold go up. You can also stay moist by applying a damp cloth to your face, and using a nasal mist.

Finally, if you really want to go to great lengths to stay well, consider avoiding public areas in the week or so before traveling. Running to the mall? Try ordering online.

It’s often not possible to avoid the workplace environment or school, but if you can swing working from home and staying away from places like the library and the local cafe for studying, it could be to your benefit.

Need to head out? Grab a disposable face mask. It can’t do any harm, and others may think you’re the one who really is sick, and give you wide clearance.

Bon voyage.
