Coronavirus: Preparing for a Pandemic

The new Coronavirus continues to spread. So far, it has killed thousands worldwide, and the globe is now on edge, facing what is about to come.

The virus has jumped China’s borders and surged into Europe, North America, the Middle East and elsewhere. According to a recent article on BBC.com, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said it is too early to label the outbreak as a pandemic, but that countries should prepare for one.

A pandemic is declared when an epidemic spreads throughout the whole world. It happens when a new disease spreads all the way across the globe.

Experts such as the US Department of Homeland Security recommend that you store a two-week supply of water and food in your home, and that you stock pile this amount of any medications you may take, as well.

It is unknown exactly how quickly and pervasively the new coronavirus may spread throughout North America, and it could be that it will only be a mild eruption, but it also could be severe.

It could be that schools and other public places may close temporarily, if there are enough cases of the illness to warrant it.

Talking to your employer about chances of working from home could be beneficial, but it is unknown if this will be necessary for the masses.

The largest study done so far on the new coronavirus showed that 81% of the cases confirmed in China by mid-February were mild. This meant they did not progress into severe pneumonia, and that patients made a full recovery.
