He does not know much about how to be a Doctor PERIOD.

Easy to talk to whether in person or nowadays on otn because of covid. He is kind and doesn't make you feel judged for your situation.

Was under his care when he was back in Ottawa on an inpatient ward for +5 weeks. He was really easy to talk with (part of that is him, part of that was I had nothing left to lose), actually listened, and admitted when he didn't know the answer to a situation (but would get the information back to me once he did).

He cared about stability before my release, he recognized that I had been through a lot prior to ending up on his caseload and that I wanted better for myself. He made the best use of the resources available and even pushed me in the right direction when my symptomatic behaviour was resistant to what would be a good choice (I might miss working the night shift, dislike that my employer used the change to lower my pay, but I don't owe them my health).

Hopefully he still has resident's studying under him. The one he had on rotation at the time was exceptionally polite and I was glad that they both had the utmost respect for my privacy and could separate out time for student education and patient care (sometimes they are the same, sometimes you have to prioritize one over the other). Any student under him will hopefully learn beyond the textbook on how working with patients can be less traumatic for all parties involved.

It was Dr Carmichael who gave me hope that other psychiatrists would listen to me without bias, treat me with dignity, and acknowledge that I have spent a lot of time on my own attempting to deal with my PTSD (it was later correctly diagnosed via the Royal Ottawa, thanks to him I trusted another very good psychiatrist). Not even psychiatrists, but I found a suitable therapist after his care. When I'm hesitant to seek out medical assistance for something she'll remind me that for all the doctors that let me down, there was one who didn't. That it's worth reaching out.

While I don't wish anyone to need the services of Dr Carmichael, he is one doctor I would trust again without reservation. That is a very short list.

Dr. Carmichael really helped my family member and restored quality to their life. Anyone who is his patient should consider themselves lucky as this guy is an awesome Psychiatrist.

Dr Carmichael was the most helpful psychiatrist I have ever had. He helped me realize that I maybe have BPD that I didn’t realize I may have had til I saw him. He was very knowledgeable and super kind towards me. This is 1/3 psychiatrists who has seen that in me. A great help.
