Very approachable person who has relatable experience in the armed forces particularly combat corps relating to war trauma and is very easy to talk to and more than willing to help with any issues you may have.

This specialist is very knowledgeable and diagnostically I think he is the best at his practice outside of Brisbane for regional and remote needs.

Without the aid and assistance of Dr Likely, my MDD would have probably have had dire consequences by now to the extent that I may not have been here today. His professionalism, knowledgeability and excellent demeanor in resolving problems is at a level that cannot be matched.

As an ex-police officer I found myself in a situation where my marital relationship was crumbling and I was dissatisfied in the workplace of being a child protection detective. I spiralled into depression and made a suicide attempt which was more a plea for help than anything else. I was admitted into the Townsville Hospital Acute Mental Health Facility but was not diagnosed with any particular mental illness though I advised that I thought I was suffering from acute depression. A year later I had transferred away from detective work and back into uniform and now had the strength to recognise that my marriage was failing. After a heated argument, police attended in some five or six cars and swamped my home. They refused to communicate with me. I became angry but not aggressive and advised they had a responsibility to communicate under their operational procedures manual. They still refused to communicate with me. As I was about to leave they blocked my way into my car and forced me into the back of a police car. I was taken to the Townsville Hospital where I was detained and advised that I was suffering from a hypomanic episode and that I had bipolar disorder with which I was diagnosed. A domestic violence order was also taken out. After being released I remained with my wife to put up a combined front to fight the domestic violence order. Police withdrew the order on the day of court after I was forced to be represented by a solicitor, apparently acknowledging the futility of the order succeeding. Not long after our marital issues resurfaced and we seperated. A year after my diagnosis of bipolar, I was subject to a noise complaint and found my house again invaded by around ten or fifteen police officers. Again they refused to communicate. As I was attempting to leave I was crash tackled without warning by two burly police officers into the bitumen. I was then handcuffed and taken up to the psych ward where I was told that I was again suffering from a hypomanic episode. The fact that the noise complaint was minor and that I was apologetic to police at the time was deemed irrelevant by police. To cut a long story short I have had much involvement with psychiatry since and maintain that I do not suffer from bipolar disorder. Dr. Michael Likely is the only doctor who has supported me that I suffer from a unipolar depressive illness and that my symptoms are brought about by environmental stressors. He has also shown concern about the treatment of psych patients by the government sector. For this I am very grateful.
